The Brahmāstra Trilogy is an Indian fantasy film series produced by Star Studios in association with Dharma Productions. Directed by Ayan Mukerji from scripts and stories he wrote, the films are based on weapons that appear across several periods in the Hindu Mythology especially Brahmāstra weapon. The trilogy is part of cinematic universe called Astraverse.[7]
The upcoming Brahmāstra: Part One - Shiva, which in itself is set to be released as a trilogy.[8][9] The first movie is centered around the Agnyastra who is none other than protagonist Shiva and will release theatrically on 9 September 2022.
Concept and development[edit]
Brahmāstra was announced in July 2014 by producer Karan Johar. Ayan Mukerji was signed as the director while Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were set to star. Mukerji has often spoken about how it took him almost nine years to create the project. Initially, the film's title was rumoured to be Dragon but was later confirmed as Brahmāstra. Mukerji explained that the title Brahmāstra "resonates with the ancient wisdom, energies and power,".[10] Mukerji also revealed that it is a "contemporary film with ancient elements."[11]
In 2017, Johar revealed his plan to make the film into a film trilogy.[12][13] The preparation for the film started in January 2018.[14] In an interview, Kapoor stated that Mukerji "has spent six years of his life working really hard to make an original story" and that the trilogy would be made over a period of 10 years[15] and refuted rumours suggesting that it is a romantic superhero film. Instead, Kapoor confirmed that the film is a "romantic-fairytale in a supernatural format." and that the film is not something which "doesn't have truth to it, or which is unbelievable".[15]
In June 2022, Mukerji announced the film would be a part of a trilogy franchise – serving as the first installment – under the Astraverse, a cinematic universe centered around various mystical āstras.[16][17]
Astraverse is a concept linked with ancient Hindu mythology of Gods weilding their respective weapons (the Astras). Building blocks of the Astraverse are the principle elements of nature—wind, fire and water.[18][19] In Hinduism, an astra (Sanskrit: अस्त्र; also Romanized as asthra) is a superpowered weapon invoked by mantras to summon the energy of a specific deity. This energy can be channeled into any object, which can then be used as a weapon. These weapons are imbued with spiritual and occult powers.
The Astraverse universe also consists of Brahmansh, a secret society of individuals who have been the protectors of the astras and the Brahmastra since millenia.[20]
