CalWave Power Technologies Inc. is an American marine energy company known for converting ocean waves to renewable energy.[1][2] The company was established in 2014 and aims to provide reliable, cost-effective, sustainable ocean wave energy access to coastal communities.[3] The company completed a 10-month open-ocean wave energy pilot project off the coast of San Diego,[4] California, in 2022, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).[5]

History

CalWave Power Technologies Inc., founded in 2014 by Marcus Lehmann, Nigel Kojimoto, Thomas Boerner, and Mark Seaman, is a marine wave technology company headquartered in Oakland, California.[6][7]

CalWave Power Technologies, Inc. offers innovative solutions centered around its proprietary xWave™ technology, designed to convert ocean wave energy into electricity.[8][9] The company has developed two models, the x100 and x800, which convert ocean wave motion into clean electricity, providing a reliable power source for coastal communities and businesses.[10] The company also developed virtual models of the xWave devices for data analysis, predictive maintenance, and performance monitoring.[11]

With its patented xWave technology, CalWave is developing sustainable energy solutions while minimizing environmental impact and operational costs.[12][13]

The company began as a startup at the University of California, Berkeley, emerging from the university's Mechanical Engineering department and CITRIS Foundry.[14]

The following year, CalWave secured a multimillion-dollar contract from the DOE for an open ocean demonstration project. The company also received backing from Breakout Labs, the Autodesk Technology Impact Program, and the Sustainable Ocean Alliance.[15]

In 2019, CalWave received two additional multi-million dollar grants from the DOE. CalWave allocated these funds to develop a commercial-scale drive train and design an advanced version of its submerged pressure differential wave energy converter (WEC).[16] The company also attracted investment from the High Tide Foundation and other sources.[17]

In 2020, CalWave’s “xNode” technology won the Grand Prize in the discovery stage of the Ocean Observing Prize, which supports innovations for the “Ocean Internet of Things.” During the same year, CalWave joined Greentown Labs and presented at the ClimateTech Summit.[18]

In September 2021, CalWave Power Technologies Inc. received a special award from the U.S. Department of Energy to pilot its patented xWave technology. Subsequently, CalWave deployed its xWave technology prototype off the coast of San Diego.[19] XWave is a device that is deployed in the ocean and generates sustainable energy by generating electricity from waves.[20] In 2022, xWave successfully completed a ten-month operational pilot.[21][22]

In September 2023, CalWave joined the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact,[23] an initiative aimed at promoting clean energy solutions.[24] The company is also a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission's U.S. Shadow Committee for marine energy standards and the National Hydropower Association's Marine Energy Council.[25]

Later in 2023, CalWave was contracted by the DOE to deploy its first utility grid-connected system at the 20 MW PacWave test site off the coast of central Oregon.[26]

In March 2024, CalWave was selected to develop a wave energy project for the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN) in Yuquot, British Columbia.[27][28][29]

In June 2024, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with AltaSea to develop a local wave energy industry and undertake projects along the California coast.[30][31][32]

Awards

  • CalWave Power Technologies Inc. received recognition as an IEEE Entrepreneurship Stars recipient in 2022.[33]
  • In September 2021, CalWave Power Technologies Inc. received a special award from the U.S. Department of Energy to pilot its patented xWave technology.
  • In 2016, CalWave won the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Wave Energy Prize.
