The U.S. Consulate General Naha[1] (Japanese: 在沖米国総領事館), commonly referred to as the U.S. Consulate General in Naha,[2] is a consular post of the United States in Urasoe, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Contrary to its common name, it is located in Urasoe City, adjacent to the prefectural capital, Naha City.[3]
History[edit]
In January 1952, the United States established its first consular agency in Naha City, the capital of Okinawa under American administration. In 1959, during the American administration, the U.S. Consulate in Okinawa, commonly known as the U.S. Consulate Naha, was inaugurated with Thomas H. Murfin as its first Consul.[4]
In May 1972, following the agreement from the previous year, Okinawa was returned to Japan. With the appointment of Richard W. Petrie as its first Consul General, the Consulate in Naha was elevated to the U.S. Consulate General Naha. In January 1987, the consulate, which had been located in Naha City, moved to Urasoe City. Despite the relocation, the official English designation remains the U.S. Consulate General in Naha.[4]
