The Embassy of the United States in Lusaka is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Zambia. U.S. foreign policy goals in Zambia are focused on reducing poverty, supporting democratic governance, improving water and sanitation infrastructure, and combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which is widespread in Zambia.[1]
History[edit]
The U.S. recognized Zambia on its independence day, October 24, 1964, at which point the American consulate in Lusaka was raised to the status of an Embassy.[2]
In 2023, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited Zambia to urge them to restructure their debt with China.[3] As of 2017, China owned $5.5 billion of Zambia's $17.3 billion debt, which was used to build infrastructure (roads, energy, railways, telecommunications) and two state-of-the-art international airports as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.[4]
