The Embassy of the United States in Ulaanbaatar is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Mongolia. The embassy was first opened in 1988, and is located on Denver Street, so named due to the large community of Mongolians living in Denver, Colorado.[1]

History[edit]

Relations between Mongolia and the United States developed slowly during the Cold War due to Mongolia’s alignment with the Soviet Union following the establishment of the Mongolian People's Republic in 1928. The United States formally recognized the People's Republic of Mongolia on January 27, 1987.[2][3]

The embassy was opened on April 17, 1988, in Ulaanbaatar, with Steven Mann serving as the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim. This followed Mongolia's transition towards democracy and a market-oriented economy after the 1990 Democratic Revolution and the subsequent dissolution of the Mongolian People's Republic in 1992.[3] The United States has actively supported Mongolia's transition, expanding cooperation across economic, political, cultural, and educational dimensions. English has been a mandatory subject in Mongolian schools since 2005. On the defense and security front, Mongolia has contributed troops to support coalition operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.[4]
