The Embassy of the United States in Koror is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Palau. The embassy plays a critical role in the strategic relationship between the two nations, particularly in the context of broader Sino-Pacific relations.[1] The embassy became the first carbon neutral U.S. embassy in 2022.[2]

History[edit]

Following World War II, Palau came under the administrative authority of the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The United States recognized Palau's sovereignty in 1994. The formal establishment of diplomatic relations occurred with the termination of the United Nations trusteeship, along with the enactment of the Compact of Free Association between Palau and the United States, which granted Palau independence while ensuring a continuing American presence in defense and other strategic matters.[3]

Initially, diplomatic responsibilities regarding Palau were vested in the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines. This arrangement continued until 1996, when Thomas C. Hubbard was formally accredited to Palau while still residing in Manila. The U.S. Embassy in Koror was established on October 10, 2004. The first Chargé d'Affaires assigned to the embassy was Deborah L. Kingsland.[3]
