The Embassy of the United States in Bratislava is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Slovakia.

History[edit]

After World War II, the first U.S. diplomatic presence was established in Slovakia with the opening of Consulate General Bratislava on March 1, 1948. Following the Communist Party takeover, this initial diplomatic endeavor was short-lived, and the mission was forced to close on May 27, 1950.[1]

The fall of communism and the Velvet Revolution led to the reopening of the Consulate in Bratislava on May 27, 1991, with notable figures such as U.S. Ambassador to Czechoslovakia Shirley Temple Black and Claiborne Pell, the original Vice Consul and later a U.S. Senator, in attendance.[1]

The United States established diplomatic relations with Slovakia on January 1, 1993, after Slovakia declared itself a sovereign state and began negotiations with the Czech Republic to disband Czechoslovakia.[2]

On January 4, 1993, the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava was established with the appointment of Paul Hacker as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim. Later in the year, the first U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia, Theodore E. Russell, presented his credentials on November 22, 1993.[2]
