DTube is a video sharing platform originally launched in 2017 as a decentralized alternative to YouTube.[1] Initially built on the Steem blockchain and the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), the platform aimed to offer censorship-resistant video hosting with cryptocurrency-based creator rewards.[2] After years of declining activity and technical challenges, DTube was relaunched in December 2025 as a conventional ad-supported video platform, retaining only a lightweight peer-to-peer feature for video delivery.
History
Origins and decentralized era (2017–2024)
DTube was created by the developer @heimindanger and launched in 2017 during a wave of interest in blockchain-based social media platforms.[3] The platform was built on the Steem blockchain, which allowed content creators to earn cryptocurrency rewards based on community upvotes, rather than relying on traditional advertising revenue. Videos were stored on IPFS, a decentralized file storage protocol, meaning content was distributed across a network of nodes rather than hosted on centralized servers.[4]
The platform gained early traction within the cryptocurrency and free-speech communities, attracting users who were frustrated with YouTube's content moderation policies and demonetization practices.[1] At its peak, DTube was one of the most prominent applications built on the Steem blockchain, alongside the blogging platform Steemit.[5]
In 2020, DTube launched its own blockchain, Avalon, and a native token called DTC (DTube Coin), moving away from its reliance on Steem.[6][7] The DTC token sale began on September 20, 2020, and the Avalon chain launched on October 1, 2020 with an initial distribution of 4,000,000 DTC.[8] This transition was partly motivated by the controversial acquisition of Steemit by Justin Sun and the subsequent Steem/Hive blockchain split, which fractured the community.[9]
Despite these efforts, DTube faced persistent challenges:
- Unreliable video playback — IPFS-hosted content was frequently slow to load or entirely unavailable, as it depended on nodes remaining online to pin and serve files.[10][11]
- Declining user base — As the broader cryptocurrency market cooled and initial enthusiasm waned, active users and content creators steadily left the platform.
- Token value collapse — The DTC token lost nearly all of its value, eliminating the financial incentive that had attracted many creators.[12]
- Complexity — The requirement for users to manage blockchain wallets and understand cryptocurrency concepts created a high barrier to entry compared to mainstream platforms.[13]
By 2024, the platform had minimal activity, with most videos failing to play due to IPFS content no longer being available on the network.
Relaunch (December 2025)
In December 2025, DTube was relaunched with an entirely new codebase, abandoning its blockchain and IPFS infrastructure in favor of a conventional web application architecture. The new version is a straightforward ad-supported video platform, comparable in functionality to YouTube, with one distinguishing feature: a peer-to-peer video delivery layer powered by WebTorrent. This P2P feature allows viewers who are watching the same video simultaneously to share video segments with each other through their browsers, reducing the platform's server bandwidth costs.
The relaunch represented a fundamental shift in philosophy — from a decentralized, crypto-incentivized platform to a traditional video hosting service monetized through advertising. The new DTube dropped blockchain-based rewards, cryptocurrency wallets, and IPFS storage entirely.
The relaunched platform features a modern dark-themed interface, supports 13 languages, and offers standard video platform functionality including user accounts, subscriptions, comments, likes, search, and trending sections. Videos are transcoded into multiple resolutions with adaptive streaming.
The original blockchain-based version of DTube remains accessible at dtube.app, where the Avalon blockchain and legacy IPFS-hosted content continue to operate independently from the relaunched platform.
Reception
DTube's original decentralized model was praised by advocates of internet freedom and blockchain technology as a proof of concept for censorship-resistant media, but was widely criticized for poor reliability and user experience.[1][14] The video playback issues caused by IPFS dependencies were a persistent complaint, with many users reporting that older videos were simply unwatchable.[15]
The 2025 relaunch was met with mixed reactions. Some longtime supporters viewed the abandonment of decentralization as a betrayal of the platform's founding principles, while others welcomed the shift toward a more practical and reliable service.
