Edmund F. Murphy III is an American business executive, who currently serves as the President of Empower Retirement,[3] the second-largest retirement plan provider in the country.[4] Providing strategic direction for Empower, Murphy oversees all defined contribution, institutional and IRA businesses and is responsible for sales, marketing and global operations.[5]

Professional career[edit]

Murphy spent time at Veritude, LLC., and Merrill Lynch, prior to serving in executive leadership roles at Fidelity Investments for nearly 20 years. At Fidelity, Murphy held roles in the company's private equity, institutional and retail businesses. Murphy also served a board member for BostonCoach, Advisor Technology Services, Seaport Hotel, World Trade Center and several other Fidelity-owned businesses.[6]

In 2009, Murphy joined Putnam Investments, where he served as Head of Defined Contribution for five years. He was appointed President of Empower in 2014.[6]

Retirement system advocacy[edit]

An advocate for more effective U.S. retirement policy, Murphy has testified before the Department of Labor,[7] the House Committee on Ways and Means,[8] the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service. He has also written articles on retirement-related matters[9] and regularly speaks at industry events.[10]

In 2016, while speaking at the Society of Professional Asset Managers and Record Keepers conference in Washington, Murphy called upon the industry to come together to help shape future retirement policy, as opposed to allowing legislators set the regulatory and legislative agenda with little industry input.[11] The speech resulted in an industry-wide forum held in late 2016 where members created a set of priorities to take to legislators and regulators.[10]
