Elavarasi P Jayakanth is an Indian entrepreneur based in Thrissur, Kerala.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Early life

Elavarasi P Jayakanth was born in 1978 in Usilampatti Madurai, Tamil Nadu as the seventh child of street vendors Periyakaruppa Thevar & Pappathy, her family later moved to Thrissur, Kerala.

She began working in grade school by selling snack mixtures near a liquor store in 2011.[8] She was forced to drop out of school in fifth grade to help with household work, but with support from her neighbour, she re-enrolled. Despite failing her Secondary School Leaving Certificate exam initially, she passed on her second attempt and pursued further studies, though circumstances led her to drop out of college when her father died.[9]

Career

After marriage, she began making chips and murukku at home and supplying nearby stores. By 2009, she started a shop with employees and had built a house, acquired vehicles. A robbery in 2011 destroyed her shop, stealing an overwhelming amount of inventory, a distribution vehicle.[10][11] The event caused severe emotional and physical trauma, leading to hospitalization. With only rupees 100 remaining and her home at risk of foreclosure, she opened a small roadside stall near thrissur railway station in 2012.[2][12] Selling parippuvadas, bajjis and hot chips. She gradually regained financial stability.[13]

Awards and honours

Elavarasi was awarded the International Peace Council UAE Award for "Best Entrepreneur" in 2019.[2] United Human Care International's Abraham Lincoln Excellence Award for excellence in entrepreneurship in 2020[1][14]
