The embassy of the United States in Abidjan is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Ivory Coast. While Yamoussoukro is the political capital of Ivory Coast, the U.S. Embassy is located in the economic capital of the country, in the Riveria Golf neighborhood of Cocody, Abidjan.

History[edit]

On August 7, 1960 President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent a letter to Prime Minister Felix Houphouet-Boigny recognizing the Republic of the Ivory Coast, coinciding with the Ivory Coast's independence from France. The same day, the United States established a diplomatic mission in Abidjan, the largest city of Ivory Coast. The American consulate in Abidjan was elevated to Embassy status, with Donald R. Norland serving as Chargé d'Affaires.[1]

Initially under French sovereignty, the nation was known as the Ivory Coast until it changed its name to Côte d'Ivoire in 1986. The United States has supported Côte d'Ivoire through various challenges, such as the 1999 Ivorian coup d'état that led to years of instability.[2]

A new U.S. Embassy chancery compound opened in July 2005. A modest security assistance program that provides professional training for Ivorian military officers in the U.S. has been suspended by the Section 508 restrictions. Côte d'Ivoire made significant strides toward stability with the 2015 Ivorian presidential election and the 2016 Ivorian constitutional referendum.[2]
