Fordingbridge Turks F.C. is a football club based in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England.
Originally founded in 1868, Fordingbridge Turks F.C. are one of the oldest amateur Association Football teams in the world.[1] [2]
Fordingbridge Turks Senior Mens team currently play within the Bournemouth Divisional Football Association Hayward Saturday League, while the club also comprises of a Womens team, and various Boys and Girls youth sides.
History
The origin of the team’s name seems to derive from wishing to emulate the determination shown by Ottoman forces at the Siege of Plevna when 40,000 Turkish soldiers held up four million Russians for six months. It's thought that the name was coined locally for the side, following newspaper reports of the siege prior to Fordingbridge's run within the Basingstoke Cup, where they were considered considerable underdogs. In 1880, seven teams, including Fordingbridge, competed for the Basingstoke Football Cup. Fordingbridge won the final at Basingstoke by 1-0, defying the odds, and repeated their success the following year. The cup was won outright and has been held by the club ever since - and a duplicate of the cup still remains on show in the Fordingbridge Museum.
In 2014 Fordingbridge Turks merged with Fordingbridge Town Youth Football Club, bringing various youth sides under the Fordingbridge Turks name.
