HODL is a cryptocurrency token created in May 2021 on the Binance Smart Chain. HODL operates off Web3 smart contracts and generates Binance Coin (BNB)[2], reflections and operates as a decentralized finance project.

The token charges a 10% fee on transactions, with 2% redistributed (or reflected) to token holders and 6% directed to wallets in a different currency, Binance Coin (BNB), controlled by the coin's authors[3], 1% directed to a "burn lottery" which lends to a deflationary mechanism for the project and 1% directed to a PancakeSwap liquidity pool. HODL has been mentioned on notable high traffic websites such as Investopedia[4], Benzinga[5] and Yahoo Finance[6]

History[edit]

HODL was released in May 2021. The current CEO of HODL is Adam Roberts, a former tech startup CEO who ran projects like EasyPreOrders which sold to Michelin in May 2019, OpenKitchens[7], a company that delivers free meals for those in need across the United Kingdom, and GoDine, a company that "helps over 100,000 people find, book and save at quality restaurants"[8]. Roberts also has been awarded the Nottingham Trent University Outstanding Alumni Award 2022 for contributions in business and society, presented by Sir John Peace.

In November 2021, HODL released the new HODL contract, an updated version of the HODL 2.0 contract. During the transition, holders were automatically migrated by "airdropping" the number of HODL tokens they held at the time of transition.

In May 2022, HODL launched HODLX, an independent and easy to use decentralized cryptocurrency exchange with independent liquidity pools.

Security[edit]

In May 2021, the 2.0 version of the token was audited by security auditing firm Techrate. In May 2022, the current version of HODL was audited by StaySafu[9]

Criticism[edit]

The token has been described loosely in May 2021 as a "meme coin" alongside Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, with much of its initial value attributed to the result of a market frenzy.

After the price of a HODL token multiplied by 31x during a single week in May 2021, opinion individuals on YouTube compared HODL to a ponzi scheme[10] or pyramid scheme, where gains to early investors were paid only by incoming investors who expected a similar rate of return, with some citing the fact that each transaction sends a portion of the transacted value to existing holders of the token, as well as a portion of the transacted value to a wallet controlled by the coin's authors.
