Himesh Reshammiya (born 23 July 1973) is an Indian playback singer, music director, and actor who predominantly works in Bollywood.[2] He started his career as music director in the film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya in 1998 and he made his acting debut with the film Aap Kaa Surroor in 2007.[3]

Personal life[edit]

Himesh Reshammiya was born to Vipin Reshammiya, a Gujarati music composer, and Madhu Reshammiya, on 23 July 1973. At the age of 21, Reshammiya married Komal and they have a son, named Swayam.[4] On 12 September 2016 it was reported that Himesh and Komal mutually agreed to separate and file for divorce.[5] On Friday, 11 May 2018 Himesh married his long time girlfriend actress Sonia Kapoor.[6][7]

Music and film career[edit]

Early career (1998–2002)[edit]

Since the age of 16, Reshammiya started producing TV serials like "Andaz", "Ahha", "Aman", "Aashiqui", "Amar Prem and Jaan" on Zee TV. He also composed title tracks for some of his serials.[8] Reshammiya's father Vipin Reshammiya was supposed to make a film with Salman Khan, back in 90s, which did not happen and Khan listening to his composition was impressed and promised him to give a break to compose music for his film. In 1998, he made his debut as a music composer with the Salman Khan starrer film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, composing two songs for the film "Pyaar Kiya To Darn Kya" and '"Tum Par Hum Hai Aatke", both song became hit.[9][10]

He then composed music for Bandhan, Hello Brother with other composers. His first movie as a solo composer was another Salman Khan starrer film, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge. He came to prominence when he composed music for Humraaz, the album became so much popular which earned him a nomination for Filmafare Award for Best Music Direction.

2003–2010[edit]

Reshammiya came to prominence when he composed songs for another Salman Khan-starrer film Tere Naam (2003), for which he won several accolades for Best Music direction including Zee Cine Award, Screen Award. The album of one of the most selling Bollywood album of all time and often regarded as the best album of the decade.[11][12] In 2004, he had worked in 10 films as a composer, among them the music of Aitraaz become popular. In 2005, he had composed songs for more than ten films including Aashiq Banaya Apne, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?. He started his career as a playback singer with the song Aashiq Banaya Aapne which was his first song as a singer, earned him numerous awards for best playback singer, including Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, Zee Cine Awards. He also earned several nomination for Best Music direction for the album also.[13]

As a singer, he has multiple popular songs such as "Aashiq Banaya Aapne", "Tera Suroor", "Zara Jhoom Jhoom", "Jhalak Dikhlaja", "Andaz Apna Apna", "Afsana", "Shakalaka Boom Boom", "Meri Awaargi", "Hookah Bar", "Chalao Na Naino Se", and "Tandoori Nights". Reshammiya's music has a style of composition based on a fusion of Western and Indian classical music, Western and Indian Rock music accompanied by techno beats. He started his acting career with his debut film, Aap Kaa Surroor.[14]

Reshammiya was the first Indian singer to perform at the Wembley Arena and the Heineken music hall in Amsterdam.[15]

Reshammiya was actively involved in mentoring and judging the singing competition, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge on Zee TV. His group was known as Jai Mata Di Let's Rock Gharana[citation needed]. He was the winning mentor of the show in 2007. In 2009, Vaishali Mhade, a female contestant from his Jai Mata Di Let's Rock Gharana, won the singing competition. He is also the team captain, judge and mentor on Star Plus's show, Music Ka Maha Muqqabla for the team Himesh's Warriors. Reshammiya was also the judge of the musical reality show Sur Kshetra, which was telecasted on Sahara One. Reshammiya appeared as the special guest in the Grand Finale of Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar 2, where he also trained the top four contestants.[16]

2011–present[edit]

On 4 November 2013, it was announced that Reshammiya will be acting and producing a movie named The Xposé.[17]

In April 2019 It was confirmed that Himesh Reshammiya will be back on-screen with the film Namastey Rome, the film which is apparently a sequel of the Namastey London and Namastey England film series. Besides he will be collaborating with lyricist Javed Akhtar in the film since they worked together in Namastey London.[18][19] Alongside that he will be acting in three other projects, one being the sequel of The Xposé which has been named The Xposé Returns.[20] Reshammiya has also confirmed that he will make a biopic on the brave soldier Bishnu Shrestha, the film will be based upon his heroics of the Maurya Express train robbery. But cast and crew have not been finalised yet.[21][22]

Controversies[edit]

In his early singing career, when he was criticized for his nasal singing, which was unusual at that time, he stated R. D. Burman also sang through his nose. After his such comment Asha Bhosle, legendary singer and wife of Burman said, "If anyone says Burman sa'ab sang through his nose, he should be slapped". Reshammiya subsequently realised his mistake and clarified that he never intended to insult R D Burman.[23][24]

In his debut film as an actor, Aap Kaa Surroor, Reshammiya added a song Tanhaiyyan from Boney Kapoor's proposed film Milenge Milenge.[when?][25] Initially, Reshammiya had composed the song for Kapoor's film, but later decided to use it for his own movie. Tips, which held the audio rights of Milenge Milenge, accused Reshammiya of copyright violation, as audio rights for Aap Kaa Surroor – The Real Luv Story were acquired by T-Series.[26] However, Reshammiya defended himself saying that he had made Kapoor listen to the song, but it was not included in Milenge Milenge. He also claimed to have tried to get in touch with Kapoor for seven months, and since there was no progress on the film, he decided to use the song for his own movie.[27]

Awards and nominations[edit]

Reshammiya won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2006 for Aashiq Banaya Aapne and also received several awards like Star Screen Award, IIFA Award, Zee Cine Award for this song and became first ever Bollywood singer to receive Filmfare Award for his debut song.[13] He also received several nominations for his Music Direction. He also won BIG Star Entertainment Awards the best Music director award for Prem Ratan Dhan Payo [28]
