Houndstooth is a British artist-led record label. It was launched in London in February 2013 by Rob Butterworth and Leo Belchetz as an extension of the Fabric nightclub.[1] Butterworth and Belchetz had previously run fabric's record label arm with Kate Malcolm, responsible for releasing its fabric and FABRICLIVE mix compilations. Rob Booth was added to the label team in an A&R role to help develop the eclectic label roster, since Belchetz’s departure he now co-runs the label with Butterworth. Booth founded the podcast Electronic Explorations in November 2007. This podcast has been used as a platform for labels and promotion agencies to promote their music.[2] This site has introduced artists such as James Blake, Mount Kimbie, FaltyDl and Cosmin TRG to the world.

History[edit]

The Houndstooth label name is derived from the distinctive Houndstooth fabric pattern. The synergy of the name and the dynamic ‘H’ logo is a modification of fabric’s iconic logo.[3]

Houndstooth was a new venture, developed with a focus on creating a home for delivering new music from emerging artist-led projects via albums, EPs and singles.[4] The very first release, The Present Tense from Call Super, showed a new direction for the fabric group.[5] The label deliberately avoided marquee names giving up-and-comers such as Snow Ghosts, Aïsha Devi and 18+ (band) a platform creating music “beyond the dancefloor”.[6] It has since developed projects from more artists, including Dave Clarke (DJ)’s Unsubscribe and Paul Woolford (DJ)’s Special Request.[7]

In 2013, the label was chosen by XLR8R as their Best Label Of 2013. In December, the label came third in Resident Advisor's Top 20 Labels Of 2013.[8]

In 2014, Call Super's album 'Suzi Ecto' was selected as Juno Plus best album of the year.[9]

In February 2016, celebrating their third birthday, Houndstooth released a compilation titled Tessellation which was their 50th release.[10] This compilation contains exclusive tracks from the 14 artists on the label at the time.[11]

The label achieved 1st and 2nd place in DJ Mag’s top 100 albums for 2017 for their Call Super and Special Request releases.[12]

On the label’s fifth anniversary in 2018 it released the experimental TS Eliot-inspired compilation ‘In Death’s Dream Kingdom’, which features tracks by Hodge, Pan Daijing and Batu. It has also celebrated 5 years of absorbing electronic music with a compilation celebrating label classics next to rarities and unreleased discoveries.[13] Innovation has been the ethos at Houndstooth, Rob Booth stated on launch that “we felt like we were in a position where we can offer a great platform for artists, just like we have done for DJs over the years with the fabric label. There’s a real wealth of musical knowledge and enthusiasm that surrounds the people, and the day to day running of the club”.[3]

Alterity released in August 2020, a compilation of music from artists new to Houndstooth.[14] This compilation features experimental electronic sounds from AYA, Slikback, Deena, Abdelwahed, LYZZA, AMAZONDOTCOM, E-Saggila, Hyph11e, and 33EMYBW.[15]

The label is involved with sound design, music sync and licensing tracks. They have contributed to major soundtracks for X-Men: Apocalypse, Blade Runner 2049, Beast (2017 film), Lady Macbeth (film), The Guest (film), Korean movie Believer (2018 Korean film), Naked Singularity (film) and Empire V (film). Their tracks have been used on fashion show catwalks and online promotion by fashion brands including Chloé, Mulberry (company), Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty Puma (brand) collection and Mugler SS21 ad. TV trailers include Netflix features, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Valorant, Little Fires Everywhere (Hulu TV Series), The Widow (Amazon TV series), Climax and Bird Box. In addition, have contributed soundtracks to many TV shows and ads that include Adidas Supercourt ad, Lululemon ad, Miu Miu (Prada) ad, How To Get Away with Murder (episode scene) and The Rain (episode scene).

Save fabric (2016)[edit]

fabric closed on the 7th of September after the London Borough of Islington Council withdrew its licence, following a suspension because of two incidents at the venue. fabric and Houndstooth Records released #savefabric, a 111 track digital compilation as a protest campaign against the club’s closure.[16] The compilation consists of unreleased music from over 100 producers that are linked to the club.[17] The producers involved had a three-week deadline to donate a track to the project. The compilation had contributions from Shackleton, Rrose, Paula Temple, Coldcut, Planetary Assault Systems, Mumdance & Logos, Kuedo, Perc, Vex'd, Overmono, Vatican Shadow & Telefon Tel Aviv and many more.[18] In addition to the compilation, the petition had over 150,000 signatures in support and raised over £300,000 in donations for legal fees.[19]

Events[edit]

In 2015, Houndstooth was invited to showcase 3 live acts from their roster at Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). ADE is a five-day electronic music conference and festival that included performances from Throwing Snow, Aïsha Devi and Second Storey.[20][21][22]
