Publication[edit]

Publication of I Love Yoo began in 2017 on the webtoon publishing portal Webtoon. By the end of 2020 it had 130 episodes across two seasons.[8]

Plot and themes[edit]

I Love Yoo is a modern-day drama romance that follows the tragic life of high school student Shin-Ae, whose world view is challenged after meeting the brothers Yeong-Gi and Kousuke.[9] It features numerous romantic interests and relationships that help Shin-Ae rediscover her love of life after being content with an antisocial and loveless existence.[2] Episodes often deal with themes of trauma, class, independence, and friendship.[1]

The plot begins with a flashback to Shin-Ae's past depicting the breaking up of her family and her difficulties with bullies and friends while going through school.[9] Shin-Ae's aggressive and closed off nature after years of torment leads to her lashing out against someone badmouthing her friends, accidentally catching Yeong-Gi in the crossfire. After attending the lavish Hirahara party, Shin-Ae realizes that Yeong-Gi is one of the wealthy family's sons, and her life quickly becomes entangled with their family drama.[2] Despite her general distaste for the situation, finding herself involved with the Hirahara family spectacle begins to help Shin-Ae deal with her own family trauma and difficulties with relationships.[9]

Major characters[edit]

The following characters are central to plot lines in the comic and make regular appearances:

  • Shin-Ae is the protagonist of the story and a high school student with a penchant for misfortune. With the help of her father she has built up a tough skin over the years to shake off the bullying and difficulties that plague her life. She has no interest in dating or forming relationships outside of her closest friends when the series begins, preferring to focus on school and jobs so that she can help her father with debt and her future college tuition. Shin-Ae is brash, hard-headed, energetic, and has a strong sense of justice that propels the story forward.[1][9]
  • Yeong-Gi is the link that gets Shin-Ae involved with the Hirahara family after she accidentally throws her drink at him while aiming for another. He is the black sheep of the Hirahara family and seems to be afraid of his father and Mrs. Hirahara. He also harbors resentment towards his half-brother, Kousuke, but at the end of the day cares deeply about him. Despite his unfortunate upbringing, he is extremely upbeat and outgoing, always looking to lift others up and make new friends.[1][9]
  • Kousuke is Yeong-Gi's half-brother and the reserved, mysterious son of the Hirahara family. He is a genius and at 20 years old, the young CFO of the Hirahara corporation. Although he appears to be the golden child of the Hirahara family, he seemes to harbor his own resentments towards his parents much like Yeong-Gi, although he chooses to rebel in subtler ways. Shin-Ae has helped him rebuild his relationship with Yeong-Gi's, and in turn their relationship has grown.[9][1]
  • Rika is one of Shin-Ae's best friend and someone who genuinely cares about her well being. Her father works under Kousuke, and she's the reason Shin-Ae was invited to the Hirahara party where she met Yeong-Gi and Kousuke.
  • Dieter is one of Shin-Ae's friends and the son of American-German parents stationed in Korea. He has a crush on Shin-Ae, but is unable to act on it because of his anxiety. He often is seen around Yeong-Gi and is with him when Shin-Ae first spills her drink on him.
  • Maya is one of Shin-Ae's friends and the little sister of Shin-Ae's best friend, Min-Hyuk. She is secretly resentful of Shin-Ae for having a better relationship with her brother than she does, but has friends with Shin-Ae since they were little.
