Isao Kobayashi (小林功 Kobayashi Isao, born October 28, 1988) is a Japanese mixed martial artist and current lightweight King Of Pancrase.[2]
"ISAO" (all uppercase) is the ring name of Kobayashi in Japan.
Mixed martial arts career
Kobayashi practiced judo in high school. He made his professional debut in a Mixed Martial Arts organization called "TRIBELATE" in Japan on April 26, 2008.
Pancrase
Kobayashi debuted in Pancrase in 2009. He had won up to the final to win the "Neo Blood Tournament" from his debut, but was defeated by TKO due to strikes by Hirotaka Tomiyama in the finals.
Kobayashi fought in the main event of Pancras on November 3, 2010, against Artur Oumakhanov, former Cage Force Lightweight champion. He won by Technical Submission via Guillotine Choke in the first round.
Kobayashi fought in the Pancrase Lightweight Grand Prix in 2011, with the winner becoming the next Lightweight championship challenger. He won by split decision against Yukinari Tamura in the quarter-finals. In the semi-final, Kobayashi had a victory over Tomoyoshi Iwamiya by Unanimous Decision, after a draw in the past.
In the finals, Kobayashi won by KO against Kazuki Tokudome after a series of punches, to become the Pancrase Lightweight tournament winner in 2011. Kobayashi's KO punch in the Pancrase official site was named "ISAO hyaku-retsu-ken (ISAO百烈拳/In Japanese, meaning that fire hundreds of fist)".[3]
In April 2012, Kobayashi challenged Koji Oishi for the championship. It was also his chance to avenge his only defeat to date. Kobayashi was victorious against Oishi by Unanimous Decision, and he became the new champion of Pancrase.
On December 1, 2012, Kobayashi fought Kenichiro Togashi at Pancrase and won by TKO at 16 seconds of the 1st round.[4]
