Ivan Alexandrovich Kashkin, born Moscow (24 June (6 July 1899) – 26 November 1963) was a Soviet Russian literary translator, critic and poet particularly known for his translations of Ernest Hemingway and Geoffrey Chaucer into Russian.
Biography[edit]
Born into the family of a military engineer, he in 1917 graduated from high school at a Moscow gymnasium and decided to pursue a literary vocation. . The beginning of his conscious life and literary activity coincided with the October Revolution, the Civil War and the first years of the formation of Soviet Union. At this time, the first publications of Kashkin began to appear in print - translations of poetry and prose, usually with introductory notes or accompanying articles.
The school of literary translation, which Kashkin created, emerged at the very beginning of the 1930s. He and his school contributed the vast majority of the translations published in the influential Soviet magazine International Literature.
Ernest Hemingway in the mid-1930s was opened to Soviet readers by Kashkin's critical article and spoke in Russian thanks to the "Kashkins". Hemingway himself highly appreciated Kashkin's work and noted that Kashkin was "the best critic and translator I've ever had"[1].
