Jaak Vilo (born 1966) is an Estonian computer scientist working in the field of bioinformatics and health informatics. He is known for his pioneering work on microarray gene expression data analysis and transcription factor binding site detection using novel pattern discovery methods[3], and Minimum information about a microarray experiment (MIAME).
He is a professor at the Tartu University. From 2011 he is head of the Institute of Computer Science,[4] University of Tartu. The unit has undergone rapid growth and belongs now to the world top 200 computer science institutes by Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2021).
Biography[edit]
Vilo earned his PhD from the University of Helsinki with a thesis "Pattern Discovery from Biosequences",[5] supervised by prof. Esko Ukkonen.
In 1999–2002 he worked at the European Bioinformatics Institute, EMBL. He was an early member of the Array Express group led by Alvis Brazma. Vilo contributed the Expression Profiler gene expression data analysis suite consisting of expression data clustering and visualisation tool EPCLUST, pattern discovery tool SPEXS, and visualisation tool PATMATCH, the URL rewriting tool URLMAP, as well as the first Gene Ontology function enrichment tool EP:GO.[6]
At University of Tartu he established a research group BIIT.[7]
Vilo is Head of the ELIXIR Estonia (ESFRI Data infrastructure) node.[8]
Vilo is member of the Informatics Europe board from 2018[9].
He is a lifelong member of professional societies International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
Honours[edit]
- 2012 Member of Estonian Academy of Sciences [10]
- 2013 Order of the White Star, 3rd Class[11]
- 2014 Estonian Association of Information Technology and Telecommunications (ITL) Person of the year 2013[12]
