Jack Michael Catain Jr. (May 29, 1930 – February 21, 1987)[1][2] was an American businessman and convicted criminal.[3] He became well-known through his connections to the American Mafia.[4]
Early life[edit]
Jack Michael Catain Jr.[5] was born in Cook County, Illinois on May 29, 1930,[1] as the younger of two sons to Jack Michael Catain Sr. (1904–1978),[6][7] a produce-market worker, and Angelina "Angie" Catain (née Capolongo;[8] 1904–1958),[9] a housewife. His elder brother was Salvatore Rocco "Solly" Catain (1928–2021),[10][11] an electrician.[12] His parents came from Italian ancestry. His paternal grandparents surname was Catania.[13][14] His parents Americanized their surname.[15]
Catain Jr. attended Von Steuben High School, a public magnet secondary school, in Chicago; graduating in 1946.[16]
Career[edit]
Catain Jr. began his career in 1951, at the age of 21. He was involved in businesses ranging from cosmetics and construction to exotic-car sales. He primarily worked as a businessman in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County.[4][3]
Catain Jr. made investments in United Artists, a production and distribution company. His son worked at the company from 1975.[17]
Catain Jr. served as one of the five vice chairmen of "A Tribute to Dolly" in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 2, 1977.[18][19] The program was a tribute to Dolly Sinatra, an Italian community leader and the mother of Frank Sinatra, an American singer and actor, who died in a plane crash 10 months earlier.[20]
Catain Jr. founded Fox Brothers Leasing, an automobile leasing company.[21]
Criminal history[edit]
Catain Jr. was well connected to the mob, with links to the highest level of American Mafia "families" in Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, and New York. He had been accused of various crimes including; money laundering, extortion, trading in stolen securities, counterfeiting, and ticket scalping.[22][4][3] He worked as a loan shark[23] and as a Genovese Mafia enforcer.[24] He had dealings with Philadelphia crime boss Angelo Bruno, allegedly.[25][26]
Catain Jr. founded The Ador Corporation, an aluminum company, upon moving from Illinois to Los Angeles, California, in the early 1950s. He headed The Ador Corporation as president when it was acquired by Rusco Industries, Inc., a Westwood-based conglomerate, with annual revenues of US$100 million, in 1964.[27][28] In 1971, he was accused of violating the anti-fraud and proxy proviSions of the Federal securities laws.[29][30][31] He resigned as president and chief executive officer in January 1972, shortly after he signed a consent decree resolving charges filed against him by the Securities and Exchange Commission. He resumed his positions as president and chairman in May 1973.[32] In June 1978, Catain was accused of laundering at least US$10 million in organized‐crime money through the company.[33][34][35][36] He denied the allegations against him.[37][38][39] He had sat on the board of directors.[40] He stepped down from the company in July 1980.[41]
Catain Jr. had been the focus of much police effort since 1971.[29] He was called "a major figure in organized crime" by a Secret Service agent in 1981.[4][42] He had been labeled a "mobster" by The Wall Street Journal.[43]
Catain Jr. had been indicted on federal counterfeiting charges in 1982,[44] but after numerous postponements, William P. Gray, a United States District Judge, dismissed the case against him in April 1986.[3]
Catain Jr. was connected to Barry Minkow, a businessman, pastor and convicted felon.[45][46][47] After graduating from high school in 1985, Minkow devoted all of his time to ZZZZ Best.[48] Short of cash, despite a recent expansion, Minkow got a loan of US$25,000, at an interest rate of US$1,250 a week, from Catain. Later that same year, Minkow borrowed another US$400,000 from Catain.[49] In December 1985, Catain Jr. sued Minkow for US$1.3 million, as part of a deal in which he arranged loans for ZZZZ Best and in return he received a 50% interest in the "insurance restoration" business, but Minkow claimed Catain was a usurer. The lawsuit was still working its way through the courts at the time of Catain's death.[50][51]
Catain Jr. was convicted at his first ever trial, on federal racketeering charges of conspiring to sell part of a US$3.3 million cache of counterfeit US$100 bills, on November 7, 1986.[52] He denied the allegations against him and accused the United States Secret Service investigators and prosecutors from the United States Organized Crime Strike Force of tampering with evidence. His sentencing was scheduled for December 8.[42][53] He had been released on US$50,000 bail.[54] He was scheduled to be sentenced on January 28, 1987, but, after he was admitted to the hospital with a heart problem on January 27, his sentencing was postponed for three weeks.[55] On February 18, it was reported that his sentencing had been postponed for six months and scheduled for August 17.[56][57] Catain Jr. died three days later while awaiting sentencing.[3] He faced up to 15 years imprisonment and US$225,000 in fines.[58]
Controversy[edit]
In December 1980, it was reported that Catain Jr. had been a guest in the Anaheim Stadium suite of the Los Angeles Rams owner Georgia Frontiere and that he was a friend of her husband, Dominic Frontiere. James Cotchett, the Rams attorney, denied the allegations. Cotchett said: "Mrs. Frontiere wouldn't know Mr. Catain if she passed him on the street. I have asked Mrs. Frontiere and she has informed me she has never met the man, as far as she knows. To Dominic's knowledge, he's never met the man, according to his own statement."[59][60][61][62][63]
Personal life[edit]
Catain Jr. resided in Tarzana, Los Angeles. He contributed to numerous charities.[3] He was a registered Democrat.[64]
Catain Jr. filed for bankruptcy in 1983.[25]
Marriages, children and family[edit]
Catain Jr. was married three times, and had two children from his first marriage.[65]
Catain Jr. married Marlene Noble[66] (1934–2014),[67][68] an apparel sales associate, in Cook County, Illinois on May 29, 1953, his 23rd birthday.[69] They had two children together; a daughter, Michele Catain (born November 6, 1953),[70][71][72][73][74] a crew member and real estate agent,[75][76] and a son, Michael Catain (born March 12, 1956),[77][78][17][79] a businessman and convicted criminal.[80][81] The couple later separated after he began an affair with the woman who would later become his second wife.[44] Their divorce was finalized on December 26, 1979.[82] He had two grandsons,[83] including Todd Durboraw (born 1976),[84][85] a former actor and crew member.[86][87][88][89] A third grandson was born two years after his death.[90] His sister-in-law, Florence Joyce "Flory" Noble (1929–2018), was married to his brother from September 25, 1953 until her death on December 22, 2018.[91][92][12]
Catain Jr. married Kathleen Richards (1938–2002), a casting director, in a shotgun wedding in Van Nuys, Los Angeles on July 4, 1980.[93][94] He gained three stepdaughters upon this marriage; Kathy Hilton (born 1959),[95][96][97] Kim Richards (born 1964)[98] and Kyle Richards (born 1969),[99][100] actresses.[101] She told her friend, Janie Halleren, of their marriage: "You're not going to believe this, but I just got married, and you cannot tell anybody that he's mafioso, and he's fantastic".[102] The couple later separated and their divorce was finalized on March 16, 1982.[103] He allegedly threatened to harm if she asked him for alimony or caused any trouble during their divorce proceedings.[102]
Catain Jr. married Phyllis Joan Sherwood (née Dorne; born May 12, 1935),[104][105][106] a performer, singer and actress, in Los Angeles, California on May 1, 1983.[107] He gained two grown stepsons upon this marriage; Michael Sherwood (1959–2019)[108] and Billy Sherwood (born 1965),[109] musicians,[110] the sons of Bobby Sherwood, a musician and actor.[111][112] She worked as the president of Beauty Sales Inc. and Le Mid during their marriage.[4]
Health[edit]
Catain Jr. had a long history of medical problems. He survived two heart attacks, had artificial hips and had also been diagnosed with terminal heart disease.[3] He suffered from a variety of heart ailments.[52]
Catain Jr. underwent open heart surgery on February 18, 1987.[56]
Death[edit]
Catain Jr. died while in the cardiac intensive care unit at Encino Hospital in Los Angeles, California on February 21, 1987. He was 56.[2] His death was confirmed by a nursing supervisor, but no further details were announced. His attorney, James A. Twitty, confirmed that he had been hospitalized for heart surgery.[3]
Catain Jr.'s visitation was held at Praiswater Chapel in Van Nuys on February 23. His rosary and mass took place at St. Cyril's Catholic Church on February 24. He was interred at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, Los Angeles, California.[113]
