Johnes Obungoloch (born in February 1981) is the first Ugandan to construct the Low Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).[1][2][3][4] He is a senior Lecturer, Biomedical Engineer, Academic administrator and Researcher. He is the current Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.[2][1][5][6][7][8][9][10] He is the founder member of Consortium Advancement of MRI Education and Research in Africa (CAMERA) which is a network of African experts, global partners aimed at bringing forward MRI access in Africa.[7][10] He previously served as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology at Mbarara University of Science and Technology.[3][9]

Background[edit]

Obungoloch was born in February 1981 in Kabermaido District.[2] His father was late Xedekiah Enyimu, a former Sub-county chief.[2]

Education[edit]

Obungoloch holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Penn State University,[2][7][11][10] a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from Keele University.[7][2][12][10] He graduated from Makerere University in 2005 with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.[2][10]

Obungoloch went to Uganda Martyrs, Namugongo for his A 'level, Midland High School for O' level in 1997.[2]

Working experience[edit]

Obungoloch is a Senior Lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology since 2020-10-01 in the Biomedical Engineering department.[7][10] He was an assistant Lecturer for Anaesthesia at Mbarara University of Science and Technology from 2006-11-01 to 2012-06-30.[10]

Obungoloch served as the Deputy Dean at Faculty of Applied Science, Mbarara University of Science and Technology before presuming office as the Dean at the same faculty.[9][3]

He is the founder member of Consortium Advancement of MRI Education and Research in Africa (CAMERA) which is supported by the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB).which aims at improving access to MRI diagnostic system and MRI research on the African continent.[7][10]

Obungoloch is a member in the Uganda National Association of Medical and Hospital Engineering (UNAMHE).[10]

  • Grant by National Institutes of Health (NIH) for "Development of sustainable low field MRI technology to aid diagnosis and treatment decisions of hydrocephalus" that started on 2021-09 and will end in 2026-06.[10]
  • Grant from Consortium for Affordable Medical Technologies (CAMTech) (Mbarara, Western Region, UG) for "Electronically controlled duction device" that was from 2014-09 to 2015-04.[10]
