Kaaarot (kaaarot.com) is a free-to-play browser-based massively multiplayer online action game (MMO) created by the French studio Lambda Humans.

Four players control animals in a bird's eye view map, representing a bucolic terrain. The goal is first to catch a carrot that randomly appears on the map. If a player succeeds, his animal is transformed into a monster capable of eating the other players, and thus earning points.

The game also includes items that players can find in crates that randomly appear on the map. These allow players to defend themselves, or to get the carrot before others.

The game has been presented in many festivals, and received a positive reception. It is still not available online, but the team occasionally gives access to it, to test, improve and optimize the game.

Gameplay[edit]

Kaaarot features 2-minute games, where four players must try to catch a carrot (the "kaaarot") that randomly appears on the map. If a player succeeds, for 15 seconds his or her pet will transform into a monster capable of eating the other players. For each player eaten, he will add 1 point to his score, the goal being to get the most points to finish first.

Players can collect items from crates that appear regularly on the map. These can help them defend themselves, or even catch the carrot before the others.

If eaten, players reappear in a random corner of the map as an invincible ghost for 2 seconds. As a ghost, they cannot pick up crates or carrots, but they can move.

Monster[edit]

The monster is larger and slower than normal characters. Every 5 seconds the monster and its hitbox grow slightly. When this happens, it means that it is able to dash over a medium distance. The monster can only grow twice, and therefore accumulate 2 dashes. When it dashes, it returns to its previous size and hitbox.

The monster can't use items, but it can destroy the crates by passing over them.

Personnages et Items[edit]

Players control small animals that they can choose before the game starts. For now, there are 4 characters: a rabbit, a cat, a dog and a penguin.

These characters are basically the same in terms of speed, size or hitbox. What differentiates them is their appearance and the items they bring into the game.

During the game, players can find and use items hidden in crates that appear regularly and randomly on the map. The item a player finds will be one of four possible random items.

These four items depend on the four characters in the game. This means that when a player chooses a character, they are also choosing one of the items they will potentially find in a crate.

Rabbit: Baseball Bat[edit]

When using the baseball bat, the player stops for 8 frames, during which time he stuns everyone at close range for 2 seconds.

Cat: Smoke[edit]

The smoke will generate a large smoke screen that will remain for 6 seconds. Everything underneath is hidden, so players cannot know their position, or whether there is a crate, a hat, or a carrot.

Dog: Confusion Hat[edit]

The hat works like a mine. A second after a player places it on the ground, the hat generates a small round area that is visible. If someone enters this area, they will have their controls reversed for 3 seconds.

If a player enters the area after another player has activated it, they will also be disoriented, but the effect will end when the hat disappears, so 3 seconds after the first activation.

The owner of the hat can also be disoriented by it.

Penguin: Teleporter[edit]

The teleporter randomly teleports the player on the map. There is no confirmation or denial that the teleporter is completely random.

Crates[edit]

At the beginning of the game, 3 crates randomly appear on the map. If they are picked up, more crates will appear. Only 3 crates can be on the map simultaneously.

This number is equal to the number of players, minus 1. If one of the 4 players leaves the game, only 2 crates can be on the map simultaneously.

Controls[edit]

The controls are quite simple: the space bar to use an item or dash, the directional arrows (or WASD) to move, and finally the tab key to display detailed statistics in the game.

Reception[edit]

Kaaarot was first seen at PAGS 2014 (Pau Animation Game Show). The team was offering players a cookie if they won against the developers. They kept this idea for all the following festivals, and it is from TGS 2014 (Toulouse Game Show).[1] and TGS Springbreak 2015 that part of the french specialized press started to notice them.

The game was also present at Japan Touch Haru 2015[2], FIJ 2015 (Festival International des Jeux)[3] and PAGS 2015[4]

Since then, the developers decided to focus on the development of the game, and occasionally opened the game to a small part of the registered community, to test and improve it.
