Kif Valentine (陈军凯; born 14 February 1989) is a Malaysian harmonica musician who won the double champion at the 2005 China Hangzhou International Harmonica Festival and became the youngest international harmonica champion in Malaysia. In 2013, he went to Taiwan and won the three harmonica championships in the international competition, becoming the first harmonicaist to win the triple championship of the international harmonica competition, and he is the current holder of the Malaysia Book of Records. He is good at ten-hole folk harmonica, chromatic harmonica, polyphonic harmonica and bass harmonica, as well as other instruments, piano, saxophone, percussion, flute and suona. He is invited to be the opening guest at the Malaysian concert of the famous jazz saxophone musician Kenny G in 2012.[1][2]

Early Life[edit]

Kif Valentine comes from a music family. He has been learning piano since he was 6 years old. In middle school, he also joined the school's brass band and Chinese orchestra, playing saxophone, percussion, flute and suona. In 2004, he began to learn harmonica at the age of 15. In just one month of study, he signed up for the Malaysian Chinese Harmonica Competition and won the Ten-hole Folk Harmonica Solo Hall Army. Since then, he has officially joined the Harmonica Team of Jiaying Yuhua Middle School. In 2005, he won the double champion at the International Harmonica Festival in Hangzhou, China, making Malaysia's first harmonicaist to win the double championship at the International Harmonica Competition in the same year. In 2013, he went to Taiwan and won the harmonica championship of the international competition, becoming the first harmonicaist to win the international harmonica competition with triple championship.

Career[edit]

Kif Valentine has taken the example of renowned Western virtuoso jazz saxophonist Kenny G and violinist's Vanessa Mae, playing in a way that moves towards popular styles of music that are generally accessible to the masses. He is recognized as Malaysia's harmonica revolutionist and stands at the forefront of the harmonica performance revolution. He can always immerse the audience in his iconic VAS experience, visual, audial and sensual. He is not just a musician on the stage. He brings the stage alive with his carefully choreographed repertoire of songs, taking the audience into a whole new magical world, where dance and music are cleverly weaved together as one to evoke a theatrical experience.[3]

Kif’s theatrical harmonica performances has earned him international recognition, sharing the stage with the likes of Shila Amzah (Malaysia), Maria Cordero (HK), Steven Ma (HK), and many others. Kif was also tasked with the important role of Opening Guest at renowned saxophonist Kenny G’s concert in 2012, mesmerizing the audience with his awe-inspiring skills, ensuring a smooth transition from the opening to the main performance. In the same year, he made his solo debut at the Mega Star Arena in Kuala Lumpur. In 2013, he also won the Prestige Top 40 under 40 award in Malaysia and was one of the top 30 candidates for the Top 10 Outstanding Young Malaysians.

In 2014, he signed with Menica Entertainment as an artist and released his debut harmonica EP "Circle". Apart from being a world-class harmonica soloist, Kif Chen Junkai has also diversified into different fields, moving into a full range of roles, such as music composer, artist, brand spokesperson and print model.
