The firm was founded in 1971 by Charles Lipcon as a sole practitioner office.[4][5] Lipcon has written several books on maritime law and related topics, including Unsafe on the High Seas.[6][7][8]

In December 2006, a class-action lawsuit was filed by Lipcon on the behalf of a group of collectors against the "first strike" designation on collectibles, claiming it to be misleading and seeking over $10 million in damages.[9][10]

In February 2013, Lipcon filed a class action lawsuit against Carnival Corporation, alleging the stranding of over 3,000 passengers for five days on a ship without proper electricity and sanitation, seeking compensation for distress and punitive damages.[11][12]

In November 2015, Lipcon, Margulies, Alsina & Winkleman filed a lawsuit on behalf of the families of five Polish crew members aboard El Faro, which vanished in a hurricane on October 1.[13] By January 2016, a settlement exceeding $5 million was reached for the families of 10 individuals who lost their lives when El Faro sank during Hurricane Joaquin.[14]

In October 2019, the law firm Lipcon represented the Wiegand family in a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean, related to the death of 18-month-old Chloe Wiegand, who fell from an open window.[15] Salvatore Anello, the child's grandfather, was arrested in 2019 and later sentenced to three years of probation for negligent homicide.[15][16] Initially, the case was dismissed in July 2021 by U.S. District Judge Donald Graham in Miami, citing Anello's unforeseeable actions as the cause.[17][18] However, in July 2023, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta reinstated two negligence claims, sending the case back to Judge Graham for reconsideration.[16]

In September 2021, Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman filed a lawsuit against Carnival Corporation, citing a passenger's injury due to excessively slippery tiling on a cruise ship.[19]
