Livy Uzoukwu OON, SAN is a Nigerian lawyer, author and poet. He is a senior lawyer in the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and one of the lead counsels defending the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election petition tribunal.[1] Appointed Attorney–General and Commissioner for Justice, in Imo State in 1994 -1996, Uzoukwu is the youngest person to hold that position in the state till date.[2]

He studied law at University of Ife (later renamed Obafemi Awolowo University) where he graduated with LL.B in 1981 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1982. He obtained LL.M degree from Abia State University in 1991 and LLD from the University of South Africa in 2010.[3][2]

Career[edit]

Uzoukwu began legal practice in 1983 and was appointed Attorney–General and Commissioner for Justice, in Imo State in 1994 becoming the youngest person to be appointed to this office. While in this position, he served as a member of Imo State Judicial Service Committee, Imo state Boundary Commission and Imo State Security council until 1996 when he was relieved of his appointement as attorney-general.[4] After his return to private practice in 1996, he was conferred with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in September, 1999 and was honoured by Federal Government of Nigeria with a National Honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in recognition of his service to the nation.[5]

Uzoukwu led the legal team of former vice president Atiku Abubakar in his challenge of the re-election of president Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 but lost the case at the Supreme Court of Nigeria on technical grounds.[6][7] In 2023, the Labour Party and its presidential candidate Peter Obi appointed him into their legal team to reclaim the election from the declared winner.[8]
