Matthew James Kenslow (born July 22, 1995) is an American author, YouTuber with over 14,000 subscribers,[1] and Instagram influencer with over 350,000 followers. In 2019, he published an anthology, Juggling the Issues: Living with Asperger's Syndrome. In 2020, his book was republished by River Birch Press. He and his story have been featured in many places, from Spectrum News Los Angeles[2] to Newsweek Magazine.[3]
Kenslow grew up with "a higher-functioning version of autism" formally known as "Asperger syndrome."[4] He has experienced discrimination for his Autism, which includes being name-called, yelled at, and begged not to have children.[3] Nonetheless, he became a pianist, juggler, motivational speaker and college graduate.[5] He has the ability to recall facts about the American Presidents, geography, science, and mathematics.[6] He states that his mission is to teach others to understand Autism, inspire, and encourage, as well as to put aside their differences and embrace their gifts.[7]
He graduated with an Associate of science degree in chemistry at Orange Coast College and with a Bachelor of science degree in biochemistry at Vanguard University of Southern California.[8]
He currently student teaches Enhanced Mathematics at Ensign Intermediate School (NMUSD), which is his former middle school, seeking to receive credentials by December 2022.[8]
Early life and education
Diagnosed with a speech delay at age 3, Kenslow was enrolled in the Preschool Intervention Program.[3] While around the age of 6, he was officially diagnosed with a mild form of autism known as Asperger syndrome.[9] He attended schools of the Newport Mesa Unified School District, being mainstreamed in third grade.[3]
After high school, he enrolled at Orange Coast College and graduated with an Associate of science degree in Chemistry.[8]
He went on to Vanguard University of Southern California in 2019, where he graduated with a Bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry.[8]
Having Autism spectrum disorder
Despite his diagnosis and discrimination, Matthew Kenslow believes that he is living a full and enriched life, fighting for his dreams both big and small.[10]
He shares common symptoms, such as lacking social and conversational skills, and having poor eye contact with others.[5] He faced the hurdles of "making friends...and bullying."[2] In school, he had difficulty with certain subjects, but others, such as math and science, came easily to him.[11]
On December 8, 2015, an article about him was published in the Orange County Register, "Being on the autism spectrum isn’t holding back Costa Mesa man".[12]
Becoming an Author
Kenslow loved to write ever since early elementary school, and began numerous writing projects for both books and television or movie scripts.[13] In late 2013, he began with the intent of writing short stories, soon becoming a novella, which ultimately became a trilogy.[13] In 2016, he found a Christian Literary agent who encouraged him to use the same idea of short stories, but as an autobiographical presentation.[14] At completion of the manuscript, the agent submitted the final piece to various publishing houses, and Axiom Press Publishers accepted the manuscript.[13] In 2020, Matthew was republished by River Birch Press for reasons not yet stated.
Discrimination
Kenslow told Newsweek that people have teased him, name-called him, sworn at him, yelled at him, followed him, ran away from him, and, on the internet, begged him not to have children.[3]
As of summer 2022, his most "horrific" experience was almost "being brutally beaten by a man with his skateboard" one night, after being cursed at.[15] He shared his experience and his bodycam video on YouTube after it happened.
Though he was often discriminated against, Kenslow said that it made him empathetic toward others and that he learned how to handle situations by not adding "fuel to the fire."[15]
