Moin-ud-din (born October 19, 1943) was an Indian screenwriter, story and dialogue writer. He hailed from Kurnool, a small town on the bank of Tungabhadra river in Andhra Pradesh, India. Moin-ud-din was one of the most successful screenwriters of his times in terms of India box office receipts. Moin-ud-din has achieved both critical and commercial success in a wide variety of genres: thriller, drama, and crime.

Some of the best known films he has written the films: Thodisi Bewafaii[1], Bulundi, Agar... If, Dil Akhir Dil Hai, Ahista Ahista (1981 film)[2], Jhutha Sach, Pighalta Aasman, Love 86, Suryaa: An Awakening, Police Public, God and Gun, Zid, Tarkieb[3], Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum.

Career[edit]

As a writer, Moin-ud-din worked on blockbuster Bollywood films such as Thodisi Bewafaii, Bulundi[4], Agar... If. He was shy of the camera and always preferred to drive the screenplay from behind the scenes supporting his brother, Esmayeel Shroff. They later co-wrote many other films together in collaboration with lyricists like Khayyam, Gulzar, Nida Fazli. His career in Bollywood spanned for over two decades until his death to a cardiac arrest in 2001.

Early Life[edit]

Moin-ud-din was born on 19 October 1943 in Kurnool, British India. His father, Shroff Abdul Kareem, was a gold and diamond trader, who later went on to become the city councillor for the Kurnool town. Moin-ud-din was the fourth of his seven siblings. Esmayeel Shroff is his youngest and only brother, who is also a successful Indian film director.

Described as being fond of Mathematics and Urdu Literature prodigy, he was educated at the Government Urdu High School for Boys at Kurnool. He graduated from SV University in Bachelor of Arts with Urdu as his major subject. He was a polyglot and fluent in Urdu, English, Hindi, Persian. While his diction is rooted in the classical tradition, he always touched on new subjects. He remained in quest of an ideal all his life.

Moin-ud-din has worked in big Bollywood hits[5] like Thodisi Bewafaii starring Rajesh Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Bulundi starring Raaj Kumar, Helen, Asha Parekh, Dil...Akhir Dil Hai with lyrics by Nida Fazli starring Rakhee Gulzar, Parveen Babi, Naseeruddin Shah, Jhutha Sach starring Dharmendra, Rekha, Amrish Puri, Pighalta Aasman starring Shashi Kapoor, Rakhee Gulzar, Rati Agnihotri, Love 86 starring Tanuja, Neelam Kothari, Rohan Kapoor, Farah and Govinda. It was a debut movie of Govinda and proved to be one of his successful hits giving him a break-through. He also wrote Suryaa: An Awakening starring Raaj Kumar, Vinod Khanna, Amrish Puri and Raj Babbar, Police Public starring Naseeruddin Shah, Kabir Bedi, Ila Arun, Zid starring Jay Mehta, Raageshwari, Mala Sinha. His notable work is seen in God and Gun starring Raaj Kumar, Jackie Shroff, and Gautami. His crime thriller Tarkieb was highly appreciated by critics, starring Nana Patekar, Ashutosh Rana, Tabu, and was a debut movie of Milind Soman. Before his death from cardiac arrest in 2001, he finished the script of Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum starring Shriya Saran, Arya Babbar and produced by Ushakiron Movies.

Personal life[edit]

He married Qamar Dawood Ali, who later changed her name to become Afzal Moinuddin after their marriage in 1989. They are blessed with the only son, Aminuddin Shroff. Alongside his movie career, he also was a successful tobacconist and owns a tobacco estate on his name near Kurnool region. He resided most of his life in Kurnool with frequent trips to Mumbai for publishing his work.
