Mope.io is an online multiplayer browser game created by Stan Tatarnykov, and released in October 2016.[1][2] Players control animals and are able to eat food sources to upgrade and move up the food chain, periodically consuming water in order to survive. Different animals have abilities and features, which become more powerful for higher-up animals.[3][4]

In September 2020, Mope.io was acquired by Addicting Games.[1][5]

Gameplay[edit]

In Mope.io, players play as an animal using a bird's-eye view, and must advance up the food chain to survive by consuming food sources or other animate entities.[1] In order to survive, players must maintain water by walking over the blue drops of water that appear in the game; each character's balance appears in a small bar, which if empty will cause the player to die. There are different biomes and terrain across the map that different creatures are better adapted to while others struggle in, such as mud and hills.[4]

A variety of different food sources can be consumed to allow the player's animal to upgrade into stronger animals. Initially, players will be limited to eating simple foods such as berries, but will be able to eat a wider range of foods by continuing to upgrade.[3][4] Additionally, players must avoid being eaten themselves by animals that are higher on the food chain than them, outlined in red,[6] but may also exert predation on animals that are their prey.[1]

To aid in surviving and accumulating enough points to upgrade, each animal has its own ability with a special effect can be used against other entities to weaken them. Such abilities become more powerful the higher a player is on the food chain.[1][5]

Players can communicate with each other using the in-game chat feature, accessed by pressing Enter and typing in text.[7]

Development[edit]

The game was founded by Stan Tatarnykov in October 2016.[1] When asked about how he maintained a fairly consistent playerbase, Tatarnykov stated "I talked with players. I was actually very open to criticism early on." He credited the game's success to this and the unique features that Mope.io has compared to other games in the .io domain.[8]

Addicting Games acquired the company from for a seven-figure sum in September 2020, taking over development. Shortly after the deal, the company disclosed that they plan to "invest further in the game to add new features" with Tatarnykov's endorsement.[5]

Reception[edit]

Mope.io has received critical acclaim for its diverse gameplay options and different features.[9][7] Maddy Cohen of Screen Rant named it one of the "Best .IO Games Worth Wasting Your Time On",[6] and a reviewer on Giant Bomb called it "extremely fun" and "[t]he best free io game".[10]
