Mysonne E. Linen (born May 16th, 1976 ), better known by his stage name Mysonne, is an American rapper, songwriter, and community activist from Highbridge, Bronx, New York City.

Early Life[edit]

Mysonne was born and raised in The Bronx. As a youth he was a talented basketball player who played against the likes of Rafer Alston and Stephon Marbury at venues like Rucker Park.

Mysonne was raised in the Highbridge neighborhood and had a tough upbringing growing up around drugs, gangs, and violence. His father passed away when he was 11 years old. Mysonne was raised by his mother and grandparents on Miriam Street. Mysonne briefly attended college where he looked to major in Criminal Justice.[1] However, he instead opted to chase his passion of being a hip-hop artist.

Career[edit]

Mysonne met with representatives from Wanna Blow Entertainment in 1997 and joined their crew which also featured Jae Millz. Mysonne had garnered a reputation on the streets through mixtapes and battles. Mysonne had battled the likes of Big L, DMX, and Shyne on the streets. Mysonne signed a deal with Chris Lighty's hip-hop and R&B management firm Violator and Def Jam Records. Mysonne's signing and buzz led to appearances on albums such as Mase's Double Up, Ruff Ryders, Ryde or Die Vol. 1, Violator's compilation Violator: The Album and DMX's The Great Depression.

Mysonne's major label debut album Life Teaches and Reality Bites, was set to drop in 1999 with features from the likes of Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip, and LL Cool J. However, his career suffered a set-back when he was convicted guilty of two cab robberies. The initial robbery occurred in 1997, when a cab driver was robbed and hit with a beer bottle. The prosecutor also accused Mysonne of a 1998 robbery where another cab driver was robbed of a ring and cash at gun point. Mysonne maintained innocence with his defense claiming he had no reason to commit robbery given he was making money as a rising rapper and a song writer for the likes of Lil Kim. Mysonne still maintains his innocence he says the cab driver was not robbed but their was a physical altercation over cab fare, as he felt he was being overcharged by three dollars. Mysonne was offered a plea deal of 1 year, however he pled not guilty and ended up blowing trial. [2] The jury found Mysonne guilty and he was sentenced to 7-14 years in prison.[3]

Mysonne was released from prison in July of 2006 serving 7 years of his sentence. Mysonne received a great deal of support upon release. He was reunited with his son who he had left as a toddler. Mysonne was courted by major music labels Def Jam and Atlantic Records.[4] However, he chose to stay independent starting his own independent label imprint U.S. (Universal Soldierz) Entertainment. Since then Mysonne has released several mixtapes and singles, and has done features with artists such as The Game, Rick Ross, Chi-Ali among others. He has been featured on compilations by DJ Kay Slay and Irv Gotti. Mysonne's freestyles have garnered significant buzz as he has performed on Funkmaster Flex's freestyle series, DJ Vlad TV, and the BET Awards.

Social Activism[edit]

Since Mysonne's release in prison he has become a prominent social activist in his community and a spokesmen for hip-hop. Mysonne has called out misogyny and the promotion of drugs in hip-hop music. Mysonne spoke out at the Women's March in Washington D.C. after the inauguration of Donald Trump. Mysonne has looked for peaceful resolution in hip-hop beefs such as that of The Game and Meek Mill. Mysonne has led several protests against the criminal justice system, most notably he led a protest of the shooting of a mentally disturbed woman named Deborah Danner. Mysonne mentors incarcerated youth through Harry Belafonte's non-profit The Gathering for Justice[5]. He also teaches a course on hip-hop music theory alongside Immortal Technique at the program. Mysonne holds turkey drives in his neighborhood every year around Thanksgiving. Mysonne has also thrown community block parties locally where NYPD officers can come into contact with youth in a positive setting. Mysonne is an advocate of Black Lives Matter.[6]
