Nazarbayev University Model United Nations
Nazarbayev University Model United Nations (NU MUN) is a student organization at the Nazarbayev University that conducts simulations on various global problems.[2] The structure of the simulations is similar to the real sessions of the United Nations. NU MUN was organized in 2013 by Zhanna Tereschenko and a group of students, who contributed to the further development of the organization.[3] This student organization could be interesting not only for students who are interested in politics and international relations, but those who would like to know more about the strategies of conflict resolution, negotiations, diplomacy, and practice debating skills as well.
History[edit]
NU MUN was founded in September, 2013 by the group of 8 students. The original idea was developed by Zhanna Tereschenko, a political science major student at the Nazarbayev University. The organization is supervised by Professors Dr. Mwita Chacha and Dr. Yoshiharu Kobayashi.[4] Initially, the student organization had a few members, however it should be noted that each semester the number of students involved in the simulations is constantly increasing. As a case in point, members of the NU MUN participate in the international conferences, and as a group of "delegates" from Kazakhstan contribute to the discussions on the way of solving global problems.
NU MUN International Conference[edit]
On the 27–28 February 2017 the organization held the first NU MUN International Conference. It gathered more than 80 young activists all over the Central Asia and Russia to participate in the discussions of the three core bodies of the United Nations, specifically Security Council, Economic and Social Council, and International Court of Justice.[5] The number of high representatives in the United Nations and European Union also participated in the conference by giving inspiring talks and speeches to the delegates. For instance, Deputy Head of the EU delegation to Kazakhstan, Mr. Kamen Velichkov and UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Kazakhstan, Mr. Norimasa Shimomura shared their knowledge and experience with the participants of the conference. The main agenda of the conference was Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the new initiative of the United Nations, which is the continuation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).[6]
