Nostr (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays) is an open, decentralized social networking protocol based on Public-key cryptography [1][2]. Nostr relies on relays to exchange data between clients. Clients can subscribe to multiple relays. Authenticity is checked on the client side based on public keys. It does not rely on peer-to-peer communication.
Project status[edit]
Nostr's first public commit was on Nov 7, 2020 [3] authored by fiatjaf, a developer with experience with Bitcoin and Lightning Network applications [4].
In December 2022, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, Inc., Jack Dorsey donated roughly 14 BTC worth $245,000 for the protocol development itself and the iOS client Damus [5].
The United States senator Cynthia Lummis, Etherium's creator Vitalik Buterin and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden are among Nostr's early adopters[6][7].
Public reaction[edit]
The problem is that most major states are pressuring corporations to limit speech.
The solution is to remove the ability to limit speech from corporate hands. By moving the content-layer of the Internet to a neutral, ownerless protocol, nobody can delete the things you share. Nobody can destroy the things you create.
I feel like I'm looking at the future.
I always understood that centralized control breeds corruption. That's why I’ve been promoting Nostr.
Damus, a Nostr client, was accepted by the Apple's App Store on March 31, 2022 and in less than 24 hours became one of the top 10 most downloaded social network apps in the world.[10][11]
[12]
Notable implementations[edit]
- Damus (Nostr client), a Twitter inspired social network for iOS devices. [13].
- Anigma (Nostr client), a Telegram inspired chat messager [14]
- Amethyst (Nostr client), a Twitter inspired social network for Android devices. [15]
