Paul Youssef shawul (born 1942) is a Lebanese modernist poet, translator, literary critic, and playwright. He has many creative and critical works[1][2]. Paul won the Abu al-Qasim al-Shabi Prize in Tunisia for his works in plays, poems, and their translation.[3]
Paul's life[edit]
Paul Shawol was born in the town of Sin El Fil in the eastern suburbs of Beirut[4]. His roots go back to the village of Dorus in Baalbek; Paul was one of the eight children of a father who works as a policeman in Public Security: four boys (one of whom is his twin George) and four girls[4]. He studied at the official primary school in Sin El Fil, then received his secondary education in a public school and then at the Qadmous Night School in Beirut before joining the Faculty of Education at the Lebanese University to be specialized in Arabic language and literature.[5]
During his university studies, he founded the "Awareness Movement," which describes that these ideas and trends derived from the nature of the Lebanese and Arab contradictions. This movement succeeded in attracting many university and some high school students until it became one of the most vital forces in the Lebanese University.
Paul worked in subtitling Western films and as a teacher at the Orient Institute in Sin El Fil during his university studies.[6]
Poet and translator[edit]
Paul translated texts of the most prominent Western creators without his work, including in his book: An Anthology of World Poetry, which involved texts by Aragon, Ritsos, Lorca, Fernando Arrabal Emmanuel, Jacques Prever, René Char, Mishima, Pablo Neruda, Holder Lin, Akhmatova, Borges, Paul Eluard, Tagore, Milos, Samuel Beckett... and others.[7]
In an interview with him, Saul says:
"I translated eight thousand poems from Spanish, German, Japanese, Indian, Italian, Chinese, and French poetries. I was influenced, for example, by Japanese poetry in my book A Face Falls and Didn't Reach, and an Arab heritage influenced me in the book Like a long month of love."[8] He adds: "French culture is part of my global poetic culture, and the last book I translated was titled Anthology of Pablo Nerod's Poetry, which is a huge book; also, I translated Lorca, Holderlin, Rilke, and Nazim Hikmet...".[8]
As for his poetic experience, in an interview with him, he says:
"I have tried to transcend the prevailing poetic classifications and poetic schools that came to us from the West, and I have constantly tried to save the concept of poetry from this duality; this is poetry, and this is not poetry because the concept of poetry is relative and the concept of criticism cannot be absolute. Surrealist criticism does not respond except to Surrealist poetry. I desired throughout my poetry not to have a poetic theory before writing, but after that, if we call that a theory. therefore, I have books that are unsimilar to others.”[8]
Journalistic work[edit]
After graduating, Paul worked in literary journalism at An-Nahar Al-Arabi and Al-Nahar Al-Dawli newspapers, then became responsible for the cultural section of Al-Mustaqbal magazine (1977 - 1979) Al-Mawqif Al-Arabi magazine (until 1992), then director of the cultural department at Al-Safir newspaper.[4]
Writings in cinema and plays[edit]
Paul wrote for the cinema the dialogue for the movie “Beirut Ya Beirut” by Maroun Baghdadi and the script for the TV series “The Betrayal” (directed by Samir Nasri), and he also quoted Gogol’s “Memoirs of a Majnun” for the theater.[6]
