Pokemon in India

Pokémon is a Japanese series that was created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. Pokémon also has a Japanese anime television series, part of The Pokémon Company's Pokémon media franchise, which premiered in Japan on April 1, 1997, on TV Tokyo. In India, Pokémon was first broadcast on Cartoon Network in 2003.[1] In 2011 Pokémon was moved to Pogo its sister channel.[2]

In 2016, Disney India have brought the Pokémon rights and started broadcast from season 1.[3] In August 2016, Disney XD (now Marvel HQ) started re-run of episodes that have already aired on Hungama TV.[4] Pokémon is available on OTT platform on Voot kids from Season 1 to 4 in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil-language feed.[5] Currently, Pokémon is broadcasting on Hungama TV and Marvel HQ.[6]

Cartoon Network[edit]

Pokémon was first broadcast in India on Cartoon Network. They started airing Pokémon with season Indigeo league on 12 May 2003.[1] In late 2003 they had aired Pokémon: Adventures in the Orange Islands and completed its run in mid-2004.[7] Cartoon network had started telecast The Jhoto Journeys and Jhoto league champions in same year 2004.[8] The cartoon Network completed a run of Master Quest till mid-2005. Cartoon Network had also added a new feed of Tamil and Telugu from Season 5 onwards on Cartoon Network.[9]

Cartoon Network had started Pokémon: Advanced, Advanced Challenge in 2006 and completed its run in 2007. Pokémon: Advanced Battle, Pokémon: Battle Frontier has aired in 2008.

The first two seasons of Pokémon series Diamond and Pearl series were aired in India on November 2009. Cartoon Network had skipped many episodes of these two seasons because of unknown reason. But these missed episodes were aired in order during the season's rerun. Pokémon season Diamond and Pearl: Battle Dimension was the last season to be aired on Cartoon Network in early 2011.

From the season DP: Galactic Battle Pokémon has shifted to Cartoon Network sister channel Pogo from this season. Pogo has broadcast Pokémon season DP:Sinnoh league victories and completed its run. As in previous seasons, Pogo broadcast Pokémon in Tamil and Telugu.

Pokémon returned to Cartoon Network in July 2014. Pokémon: and Black and white premiered on Cartoon Network in July 2014.[10] Cartoon Network completed broadcast of Pokémon :Black and white till August at night, but this season was only made available on Hindi and English-language feed, unlike the previous season they did not have Tamil and Telugu feed dub. Pokémon rights of Cartoon Network expired in late 2014.[10]

Disney India[edit]

In 2014 Disney India acquired the right of Pokémon but they did not get the rights of previous regional dubs in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.[3] Disney India premiered Pokémon Season 1 Indigo league on May 14, 2014 on Hungama TV at 1pm with the repeat.[3][11] Disney India aired Season 1 with only with Hindi dub, no English feed was there. From season 2 Pokémon: Adventures in the Orange Islands, Hungama TV introduced How that Pokémon segment between episodes. Disney India started to use the Red logo instead of the yellow logo that is internationally used. Disney India had aired some episodes of Pokémon: The Johto Journey's in Tamil and Telugu dub but not all episodes are dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. Hungama TV have skipped the title card of some episodes of Pokémon: The Johto Journeys in the initial run but they have restored them in re-runs. From Pokémon: Johto League Champions Hungama TV started to air additional episodes dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.[10] Pokémon: Master Quest had premiered on Hungama TV on June 2015 and the renamed episode had aired as Pokémon: Advanced.[12] From August 2016 Hungama TV's sister channel Disney XD (now Marvel HQ) started to re-run previously aired seasons in regional dubs.[4]

The remaining series episodes of Master Quest later aired as part of the sixth season starting from August 31, 2015, while the Hoenn region of Pokémon: Advanced had aired on Hungama TV from September 16, 2015 to November 18, 2015.[12] From February 15, 2016 to April 28, 2016, episodes of Pokémon: Advanced Challenge premiered on Hungama TV. Throughout the anime's run on Hungama, many new blocks were introduced that were dedicated exclusively to the series, including PokéThon, PokéVaar, and PakdoThon.[13] Although Disney XD India had only aired re-runs of the previously aired first seven seasons which had first premiered on Hungama TV. From Pokémon: Advanced Battle season onwards, new episodes moved to Disney XD from May 7, 2018 to May 31, 2018. Although Disney XD has an English audio feed unlike Hungama, the anime aired on both the English and Hindi audio feeds.

Starting from season Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl new voice artist were introduced, such as Prasad Brave who have returned as the new voice of Ash[14] and for other characters. In Tamil and Telugu dubs, the same cast was there. Disney XD started to air Pokémon: Battle Frontier and Pokémon :Diamond and Pearl on 12 November, 2018. Disney XD had completed the run of these two seasons in a single week. On 19 January 2019, Disney XD India was rebranded as Marvel HQ and the channel continued to broadcast Pokémon.[15] From 14 May 2019 to 24 May 2019 Marvel HQ aired Pokémon: DP Galactic Battle. This season also featured a comeback of the old dubbing artist for Hindi dubbing who had been replaced by a new dubbing artist for season 10. From this season Disney India has started to use the International Yellow logo instead of the Red logo. This season was re-aired on Hungama TV from August 10, 2019 to August 30, 2019, marking the first return of the anime on Hungama TV since 2016, Hungama TV had not aired all of the season's episodes.[16]

On July 8, 2019, the English dub of the twelfth season, Pokémon DP: Galactic Battles, began to air on Disney International HD, while Hungama TV and Marvel HQ continued to air the Hindi, Tamil and Telugu dubs of the previous seasons of the anime. The thirteenth season, Pokémon DP: Sinnoh League Victors, has aired on Marvel HQ from September 2, 2019 to September 13, 2019, in all three regional dubs. From November to December 2019. Hungama TV had aired the Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu dubs of Pokémon DP: Galactic Battles till ''A Rivalry to Gible'', after that the remaining episodes of the season have not been aired. Hungama TV and Marvel HQ skipped the ''Memories Are Made Of Bliss'' episode of season Pokémon: DP Sinnoh League Victors battles on their initial run of this episode on their channels for unknown reasons. But this episode 34 was later aired in August 2020 on the re-run of this season on Marvel HQ.

Season 17 Pokémon: XY started airing on Hungama TV from 9 May 2015 with any announcement. The channel announced that new episodes of season 17 will air every weekend.[10] The channel has skipped the title cards of some episodes of this series in between. The channel stopped airing new episodes of season 17 for unknown reasons but the channel started to air new episodes of this series from 1 August 2015. The channel completed its initial run of season 17 on 14 November 2015. The season re-aired on Marvel HQ from March 20 to March 31, 2021, and some of the episode titles cards were restored during the re-runs

Voot kids[edit]

Pokémon is available on Voot Kids app from Season 1 to 4 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu feed.[17] Pokémon: Battles Frontier had aired on Voot Kids before Disney XD. .Earlier, only the first eight seasons were available to stream on Voot.But starting from October 15, 2021, episodes from the ninth, tenth and eleventh seasons are also made available on Voot Kids in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.the Disney dubs of the first 21 movies are available on Voot in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu

Disney India had premiers of all its Pokémon movie on Hungama TV. The movie after premiere on Hungama TV are then repeated on Marvel HQ (previous Disney XD). Disney India alway aired it's all Movie in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu feed. Disney India had skipped the movie Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea for unknown reasons.

OTT/Theatrical Release[edit]

Pokemon movie Detective Pikachu was the first Pokemon movie to release in India theatre's on May 10, 2019.[20] This movie had released in Hindi and English feed.[21]

Pokemon Movie Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution was first Pokemon to ne released on an OTT platform on Netflix on February 27, 2020.[22] This movie is availablein Hindi, English, and Japanese feed.[23] In Hindi dubbing of this movie Disney India Hindi Dubbing Pcast was used.[24]
