Ravi Atchuthan (born June 3, 1965) is a Canadian filmmaker, cinematographer, and editor. He emerged as one of the pioneers of the Tamil-Canadian film industry with the release of his first film Uyrie Uyrie in 1996. Since then, he has directed 8 films and been the cinematographer for 12 films and the editor for 10 films. In 2023, Ravi Atchuthan was awarded the Pioneer Canadian Tamil Filmmaker award by the multicultural organization 'Heritage Beyond Boarders' for his contributions in the Tamil-Canadian film industry.[1] Ravi Atchuthan has completed over 25 years in the Tamil-Canadian film industry.

Career[edit]

1993 - 1998: Short film and feature debut[edit]

In 1993, while studying at Ryerson University, Ravi Atchuthan made the short film Kutty Rajakkal with his classmates. Three years later, in 1996, he made his directorial debut Uyrie Uyrie.

In 1998, he was the cinematographer for the film Vasantha Gaanam.

2003 - 2008: Breakthrough and critical acclaim[edit]

In 2003, he directed his second film Kanavugal. This film caught the attention of Swetha Cine Arts, a production house based in Canada, and they produced Ravi Atchuthan's third film, Methuvaga Unnai Thottu in 2004, which opened to critical and commercial success. Part of the film was shot in Sri Lanka and Canada, two recurring locations in Ravi Atchuthan's films.

In 2005, he directed Sugam Sugame.

In 2006, he directed the gangster comedy, Canadian. The film shed light on the 2004 Indian Tsunami, which also effected Sri Lanka.

He was also the cinematographer for the film Throgi.

In 2007, Ravi Atchuthan collaborated with Swetha Cine Arts for a second time, this time for Malare Mounama, the film brought major critical acclaim due to its depiction of the Civil War in Sri Lanka. He was also the cinematographer for the film Orr Ithayaththile, a film based in London, England.

After the release of Malare Mounama, Ravi Atchuthan took a hiatus from filmmaking.

2014 - Present: Return to filmmaking[edit]

In 2014, Ravi Atchuthan began production on his next film, Dawn to Dusk. The film was partially shot in Canada and Cuba. The film marks the first time Ravi Atchuthan didn't edit his own film, the editing was handled by AVM Studios in India. The film released in 2017, and can be streamed on YouTube.

He also was the cinematographer for the film Ithu Kaalam, which was based in Switzerland.

During the production of Dawn to Dusk, Ravi Atchuthan began production on I Scream in 2015, a film he and his wife produced under the banner, Lucky Exclusive Studios. I Scream marks the second collaboration between Ravi Atchuthan and AVM Studios. The film released in 2016 and can be streamed on YouTube.

In 2023, Ravi Atchuthan was the cinematographer for his son's first short film, Apoorva,[2] which won two awards at the Toronto Tamil International Film Festival.[3]

Ravi Atchuthan is currently working on a short film titled Kanavu Desam (transl. Dream Land). The film is produced by Dyenvor Express. The release date is yet to be announced.
