2023 National Teacher of the Year Award Ceremony

Rebecka Peterson is an American educator and author in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 2022, Rebecka was named Oklahoma Teacher of the Year;[1] and in 2023, she was selected as the National Teacher of the Year.[2] [3] She is one of three Oklahomans to be selected as National Teacher of the Year, with the others being Lawana Trout, 1964, and Edna Donley, 1959.

Rebecka is currently a finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics Science Teaching (PAEMST).

Biography[edit]

Rebecka is an immigrant of Swedish-Iranian descent and lived in several countries around the world as her parents traveled as medical missionaries.[2]

She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Oklahoma Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of South Dakota.[2]

Rebecka is currently a secondary mathematics teacher at Union High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Authorship[edit]

Rebecka has written over 1,400 posts for One Good Thing, a blog for teachers to track the good things happening in their classrooms.[4]

She has also been featured in national publications such as PBS Education[5], Smithsonian Magazine[6], and Google Education.[7]
