Resident Evil: Remedium is an upcoming American action horror streaming television series based on the video game series with the same name by Capcom which will premiere on Netflix. The show consists of eight, hour-long episodes. Andrew Dabb served as show-runner and writer for the first episode, with Bronwen Hughes serving as executive producer, and the director of the first two episodes of the series.

The show was produced by Constantin Film who have previously produced the Resident Evil film series,[1] as well as Moonlighting Films, a South Africa-based production company which worked on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The series stars Lance Reddick, Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, and Paola Núñez.[2]

The first season is expected to debut in 2022 on Netflix.[citation needed]

Plot[edit]

The series' main plot is spread out over two points in time - 2022 and 2038, with a gap of some 16 years.[3][4] The "past" plotline deals with the struggles of 14 year old half-twins Billie and Jade Wesker, adopted children of Albert Wesker born through suspicious circumstances. Their lives take a dramatic turn when Albert is awarded an executive position at the struggling Umbrella Corporation that once employed him, and they move to the Umbrella's planned community, New Raccoon City. While there the two girls stumble onto the dark secrets behind the city's history and Umbrella's dark legacy, while their father coordinates a response to the outbreak of a retroviral bioweapon called T-virus.

In the "present" of 2038, the T-virus has reduced human civilisation to 15 million refugees living in walled city states, surrounded by the six billion "Zeroes" who contracted the disease and became roaming gangs of cannibals. The most powerful organisation left on Earth is the Umbrella Corporation, backed by its military arsenel, who are conducting a global manhunt for Jade.

Development[edit]

In January 2019, it was announced that Netflix was in development of a series based upon the Resident Evil franchise.[6] No major updates were given, until August 2020 when it was revealed that the series had been picked up for 8 one hour episodes.[7] It was also revealed that Andrew Dabb would write the series, in addition to him serving as an executive producer and showrunner. Bronwen Hughes was also executive producer and directed the first two episodes.[7]

Production was originally set to take place from June to October 2020, to be handled by Moonlighting Films, which previously worked on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, however, these plans were shelved for the rest of the year.[8] Production resumed on 19 February 2021, with principal photography split into four production blocks and concluding at the start of July.

Casting[edit]

In June 2021, it was announced that Lance Reddick had been cast in the role of Albert Wesker, with Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, and Paola Núñez also being announced as part of the cast.[2]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography took place from February to July 2021. Internal scenes were filmed on a soundstage at Cape Town Film Studios, while dilapidated local buildings such as the Werdmuller Center and the Maitland Abattoir were used for location filming. Production was divided into four production blocks, with directors Bronwen Hughes, Rob Seidenglanz, Batán Silva and Rachel Goldberg each responsible for two episodes each. As part of block 3, scenes were filmed aboard the Sarah Baartman and S.A. Agulhas, with the help of Frog Squad, a company specialising in underwater filming.[9]
