Roots is the sixth studio album by The John Spignesi Band. It was recorded during the Summer of 2021, at Ace Tone Productions in Bethany, CT with longtime collaborator, Matt Terribile. It is the band's first acoustic record.
Background[edit]
Spignesi spent most of the quarantine period of March - June 2020 writing. With the pandemic raging, as well as the death of George Floyd, some songs were written as a sense of therapy. Spignesi and Jeffery performed a few socially distant duo gigs during the Summer of 2020, eventually releasing a live session dubbed The Richmond Recordings.
Recording[edit]
After several playthroughs and live performances, the band agreed to record using acoustic instruments. Spignesi played acoustic guitar, Jeffery alternated between fretless and upright bass, and Alling performed on a much smaller drum kit with calf-skin heads. The group once again collaborated with longtime friend and engineer, Matt Terribile of Ace Tone Productions. Greater emphasis was spent on the vocals, with harmonies and song topics at the forefront. Former co-worker of Spignesi, Sara Marshall guested on the track "Be Fair." Jeffery's son, James, played on the entire record due to the departure of Ed Murnane.
Release[edit]
On January 15, the first single off Roots, entitled "Days Gone By," was released to all major music platforms with an accompanying music video. The song amassed to thousands of streams, many praising the new direction of the band's sound and the topic of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The second single, "Catch Yourself Before You Fall," was released on February 27.
Roots was released on March 19, 2022. The release party was held at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, CT, with CDs and Posters available for sale. The album was released to all major music platforms the same day.
