Career With The John Spignesi Band[edit]

The John Spignesi Band (JSB) was formed in 2015 by Spignesi. Jeffery was a fan of the band and a friend of the band's then current bassist William "Thom" Guthrie. Having seen the band a few times in concert, eventually joining in 2019 after reading an anonymous ad on Craigslist, not knowing that it was for JSB. Jeffery quickly got to learning the band's lengthy catalogue of original music and prepared for the band's Summer 2019 festival tour

Joe's first show was at Crystal Bees in Southington, CT on April 5, 2019, where JSB opened for the well known brass funk band "The Funky Dawgs." Since his joining, he has played on numerous studio and live JSB recordings and has continued to play and tour with the JSB through 2019.

Recordings and Releases from Jeffery's Home Studio, Savin Rock Studios[edit]

Nameless[edit]

As the pandemic-impacted summer of 2019 came to a close, JSB drummer Matt Alling approached Spignesi with the idea of a concept album based off "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. An English Literature teacher who grew up not far from Poe's Baltimore, Jeffery shortened the poem and divided it into five sections, and Spignesi set out to write the music for each section. The band recorded the instrumentals for "Nameless" in just two days in late September. The need to write and arrange in-studio forced the band to find an alternative to using their preferred studio, Ace Tone Productions, and the great engineer Matt Terribile for recording. The band instead recorded at Joe Jeffery's home studio constructed in a concrete and wood barn at his home on Connecticut's Long Island Sound. Officially known as Savin Rock Studios, the barn has also been dubbed by Spignesi "The Richmond House. JSB logged nearly 17 hours of recording in just two days, with the three members arranging the songs only moments before recording. Joe's son, Keyboardist and Pipe Organist James Jeffery, then fifteen years old, assisted in engineering. Dr. Jeffery recorded, mixed, and mastered the album at Savin Rock Studios using the prior album's CD mixes by the band's usual collaborating engineer and producer Matt Terribile' as guides for replicating the studio sound of the band. The release, dubbed Nameless was released on October 15, 2020.

Just The Jams[edit]

Joe Jeffery suggested to the band releasing super mixes of live improvisations from the 2019 tours.  Spignesi sent to Jeffery's home studio four hours of selected instrumental full band improvisations.  These were mixed into two releases, Just The Jams, Volume I and Just The Jams, Volume II.  The releases were accepted for streaming on Spotify and Pandora and received a friendly reception among the band's fans on social media platforms.

The Richmond Recordings[edit]

Shifting to outdoor gigs during the pandemic did lead to one rain cancellation of a duo performance of Spignesi & Jeffery music on a chilly day in November 2020. The two shifted plans to broadcast live via social media from the Richmond House studios.  Jeffery mixed down and mastered a full album of original songs, recorded with acoustic guitar and fretless electric bass for a special release entitled, The Richmond Recordings. The band mailed out copies of the album Valentine's Day weekend to fans on their mailing list, as a thank you and a fun surprise.  Many fans responded by posting pictures of their music-by-mail, celebrating the connection and community that music creates.

Choice Cuts[edit]

Jeffery has mixed and mastered various live recordings of JSB, with the tracks being released following each tour. These editions are known as the "Choice Cuts" series.
