Professor Sajida Haider Vandal is a Pakistani architect, educationalist, and rights activist. Her main fields of expertise are architecture and planning, cultural heritage management and conservation, art and culture education and community development and empowerment of women.
Early life
Sajida Haider Vandal was born in Shillong, Assam, in 1947, but grew up and lives in Lahore, Pakistan.
Education
Sajida began her education in the Sacred Heart Convent school for girls in Lahore, and went on to take a first degree in Architecture at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, in 1970[1]. In 1984 she followed this with a Masters degree in the Built Environment and Urban Design at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Sajida is a Fellow of the Institute of Architects, Pakistan (IAP).
Career
After completing her Masters Sajida initially worked in an architectural practice together with her husband, Pervaiz Vandal, designing a large number of buildings in Lahore and surrounding areas. She combined this work with teaching and developing new courses in architecture and cultural studies at the National College of Arts, Lahore, where she became first Professor and later Principal.[2].
During this period she was also working as a consultant, trainer and facilitator for UNESCO in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and beyond[3]. Following the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, Sajida introduced intangible cultural heritage management into the work of the THAAP group, of which she is CEO. In conjunction with UNESCO, Sajida and THAAP have managed numerous projects relating to the architectural, physical, and intangible cultural heritages of Pakistan. For this work she was awarded the title of “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres” by the French Government[4].
From 2018-2021 Sajida was Vice Chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Arts and Culture.
Now widely recognised as a leading expert in intangible heritage in Pakistan and beyond, in 2023 she was selected as an expert member of the governing body at Unesco’s ICH Centre Tehran for a period of three years[5]
