Samir Shantilal Somaiya (born February 28, 1968) is an Indian industrialist, educationist, and philanthropist. He serves as the Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries.[1] He is the Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University,[2] and President of Somaiya Vidyavihar.[2]

He served as the elected President of the Indian Merchants' Chamber for 2023-24[3] and earlier served as President of the Indian Sugar Mills Association in 2008-09.[4]

He also chairs several trusts, including the K. J. Somaiya Trust and the K. J. Somaiya Medical Trust.[5] Somaiya is a member of the Council of Religious Leaders, and was the leader of the Hindu delegation for the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, Kazakhstan in 2024.[6][7]

Early life and education

Samir was born in Mumbai, India. He pursued his higher education at Cornell University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemical engineering in 1990, a Master of Engineering in 1992, and an MBA in 1993.[1] He later completed postgraduate studies at Harvard University.[8]

Work

In 2010, Samir Somaiya became President of Somaiya Vidyavihar and the K. J. Somaiya Medical Trust, institutions engaged in education, healthcare, and rural development across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat. He is responsible for over 30 institutions, including schools, colleges, and a large teaching hospital.[1] He has led various initiatives in rural education and women's empowerment through the Somaiya Trust.[9]

Samir Somaiya introduced several campus development initiatives at Somaiya Vidyavihar. These included improved landscaping, identification cards, intercampus transportation, and innovation spaces. Somaiya also serves as a visiting lecturer at Cornell University's School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.[1]

In 2011, Samir Somaiya and his wife, Amrita, founded Kitab Khana, an independent bookstore in Mumbai's Fort area, established to promote diverse literature and support a community of readers.[8]

He founded the Research Innovation Incubation Design Laboratory (riidl), a business incubator that supports early-stage entrepreneurs and promotes innovation.[3]

Samir is married to Amrita Somaiya, who is founder of Kitabkhana, a bookstore located in South Mumbai.[1] [17]
