Shafiullah Al Munir is a Bangladeshi industrialist and sports administrator who served as president of the Bangladesh Cycling Federation until 2 March 2020, having been appointed by the Bangladesh government on 12 May 2018.[1] He was the chairman of the 2017 Men's Hockey Asia Cup, an adviser of the Asian Hockey Federation, and chairman of its Event Strategy & Development Committee.[2] He was also the vice-president of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation, the Bangladesh Archery Federation, and the Bangladesh Weightlifting Federation. He founded Index Group, a Bangladeshi business conglomerate, in 2006 and is currently serving as its CEO.[3]

Early life

Munir was born in the village of Shibpur, located in Baghil Union of Tangail Sadar Upazila.[4] His father, the late Yakub Ali, was a local pir.[5]

Career

Munir founded Index Group in 2006 as a consultancy firm.[6] Initially, it contracted with the government-owned Sylhet Gas Fields Limited and a World Bank project.[7]

He was elected vice president of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation in 2013 from the Sajed-Munir panel, although he initially boycotted the election.[8][9][10] On 18 October 2017, he was appointed adviser and chairman of the Event Strategy and Development Committee of the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF).[11][12] He is the first executive representative from Bangladesh to the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF).[2] He was the chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 2017 Men's Hockey Asia Cup.[13] He received the 2017 AHF "High Performance Committee" award.[13] He served as vice president of the Bangladesh Weightlifting Federation and the Bangladesh Archery Federation.[14] He organized a national badminton tournament titled Index Summer Open (Ranking) Badminton Tournament–2017 in collaboration with the Bangladesh Badminton Federation and Index Group.[15]


He was appointed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports as president of the Bangladesh Cycling Federation (BCF) under the National Sports Council Act of 1974 (amended) on 12 May 2018.[14] He organized the 40th National Cycling Competition on 18 April 2019, joined by 15 district sports associations and six corporate groups.[16] He also planned the Bangabandhu International Freestyle Stunt Cycling Competition 2020, scheduled for 27–29 February in Dhaka, with participants from 25 countries.[17] The event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[18] He resigned from his post on 2 March 2020, citing health issues.[19]
