Mariyam Shajan Muaz Shaheem [1](born Febraury 8, 1994), professionally known as Shajaan Muaz Shaheem [2](Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a Maldivian Climate Activist, Social Advocate and a Entrepreneur. She serves as the Secretary General of the Feline Welfare Organization and is active in initiatives related to animal welfare, social justice, and environmental sustainability.[3][4][5][6][7][8] In 2019, Shajaan and Abdulla Fisam co-founded Resilience Maldives, which was initially established as a cooperative and later became a non-governmental organisation focused on climate justice and sustainable development. That same year, Resilience Maldives acquired the Mary Robinson Climate Justice Award for the project, the Maldivian Environment and Stewardship Programme (MESP). The programme was later integrated into One Young World, where shajaan was appointed Head of Compliance of the initiative.[9][10]Through Resilience Maldives, Shajaan has also contributed to several research and community projects. Notably, the organisation co-led the Shifting fish consumption preferences can impact coral reef resilience in the Maldives: a case study a Journal research initiative with Dr.Shreya Yadav, Abdulla Fisam, and the University of Hawaiʻi, focusing on marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices, published in Marine Policy [11][12][13][14][15][16] She also served as the Secretary General of the Elderly Foundation of Maldives [17] and is the former Regional Director of Maldives Business Awards[18][19][20]
She is married to Ahmed Haitham, a Maldivian Parliamentarian noted for his work on social justice, child welfare, and anti-corruption.[21][22][23][24][25] [26][27][28] Throughout his tenure, she faced significant threats to her life due to her husband’s political involvement, particularly his outspoken stance on social justice and child welfare issues. In 2021, while pregnant with twins[29][30], Shajan Muaz Shaheem was the victim of a violent attack, which resulted in trauma and the premature birth of her children.[31][32][33] [34]Following this, she continued to experience persistent threats[35][36][37], harassment, and including a near-fatal car crash reportedly caused by unknown assailants in Sri Lanka,[38][39][40] [41][42]as well as an explosion that damaged her car,[43] [44]which Sri Lankan police believe was the result of an implanted device.[45]These events were linked to Haitham’s political actions, including his role in exposing corruption. Despite numerous attempts to ensure her safety,[46] [47]the family was subjected to a sustained campaign of intimidation and violence, exacerbating their precarious situation during their time in Sri Lanka.[48][49][50][51]
