History
2017 Season
Kings Basketball Club was registered as a sporting organization on 19th January 2017, at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Maldives. The Club was incorporated into the Commissioner of Sports of Maldives’ listing in 2018.
Kings BC began with a roster of seasoned veterans, including numerous national team stars, and a core of younger, up-and-coming talent. The Club’s first captain was Mohamed Zilaal, then also the captain of the Maldives and widely-regarded as the greatest basketballer in the country’s history. Zilaal, along with Ahmed Firash[1], Mohamed Khuwailid Al[2]i, Ahmed Afson Rashad,[3] Mohamed Samooh[4], Muzzammil Mohamed, Ahmed Najeel[5] and Rishfan Rasheed[6] had all joined Kings BC from Red Line Club – one of the two most successful clubs of the previous decade. They were joined at Kings by free agents Haisham Dhaudh[7] and Mohamed Naif Rushdi, along with Ibrahim Anfaal Shareef[8] and Imran Ahmed[9], who had both last played for T-Rex Basketball Club.
From its inception, Kings BC became the first Maldivian basketball club to feature a full roster of semi-professionals. The Club also sent talented wingman Rishfan Rasheed on a one-month training tour to Belgrade, Serbia to train in the renowned KK Cerak Academy, under the watchful eye of former Maldives National Coach Marko Piplovic.
The Club’s first undertaking was the 3rd MBA Cup 2017[10], in which they reached the finals only to be beaten by T-Rex BC. The Head Coach was Jeewan Shriyanta Jayaweera of Sri Lanka. Zilaal, Rishfan and Firash were all selected among the Best 5 Players of the tournament.
Kings BC next competed in the 25th MBA Championship 2017, Men’s Division. Once again, the Club breezed through to the final only to be outdone by T-Rex BC in a hard-fought encounter. By then, Kings BC had brought in Filipino Jay Salazar Cambarihan as Head Coach and appointed experienced local trainer Mohamed Naseer as his assistant. Zilaal and Rishfan were once again selected among the competition’s Best 5 Players. Ismail Farhan and Ahmed Aiman Rasheed, both of whom had played in the successful RLC side of recent years were brought in to bolster the roster and to provide cover for injured star guard Anfaal, who was ruled out for nine to twelve months with a serious PCL injury.
In September of 2017, Kings BC was invited to participate in the regional FIBA 3x3 Road to Mexico Basketball Tournament in New Delhi, India, which was organized by 3x3BL International Pro Basketball League of India. Kings BC was led by Khuwailid, and included Najeel, Imran and Haisham. The touring group was managed by Club Executive Committee Member Ismail Rishad. Kings BC put on a good show in the top-tier tournament featuring some of the best talent from India, Malaysia, Japan and Sri Lanka.
Entering the year-end 12th National Basketball League 2017, Men’s Division 1 and the 36th National Basketball Tournament, Men’s Division 1, Kings BC was determined to create history by winning a national crown in its very first year. Serbian pros Nikola Cvorovic and Aleksandar Vuletic joined the squad for the designated overseas slots.
Kings BC created history by winning every single game in the League and lifting its very first trophy, including two resounding wins against T-Rex BC. However, in the final of the National Tournament, T-Rex would again beat Kings BC, making it four finals out of four for Kings BC, but only one trophy in the year.
Kings BC was proud to return half of the Maldives Men’s National Team in 2017; captain Zilaal, Firash, Afson, Rishfan, Khuwailid and Anfaal.
The main sponsor of Kings BC in 2017 was State Trading Organisation. The team played with STO’s “PowerMix” product sponsor on their home uniform, as well as sponsors “Submore”, “Vinorva”, “Juweys Café” and “MWSC”. The 3x3 team tour to India was sponsored by “Maldivian” airline.
2018 Season
2018 saw the entry into the fray of Kings BC’s sister club Royals BC. Some of the original Kings BC players moved over to the new team, allowing for new signings by Kings BC. To start the 2018 season, Ali Mabruk Lathyf joined the club. Mid-way, two of the country’s rising talents in Abdulla Aflah Shareef[11] and Abdulla Amzar Mohamed[12] would also sign for Kings BC. By the time the national league and tournament came around, Aflah’s talismanic elder brother and former national team point guard Ahmed Ifsah would also be acquired by Kings BC. Trainer Ali Isham Mohamed would become a new inclusion on the coaching panel. Notable players to leave Kings BC during 2018 were legendary centre Ahmed Afson Rashad and Mohamed Samooh.
The year’s first tournament was the 26th MBA Championship 2018. Yet again, Kings faced their now familiar rival T-Rex BC in the final. T-Rex won the encounter, making it back-to-back MBA Championship triumphs for the team. Rishfan yet again featured among the tournament’s Best 5 Players.
Kings BC acquired former Los Angeles Lakers and UCLA Centre Michael “Mike” Dandre Fey and talented Filipino wingman Edzel Bauto Mag-isa as overseas pros for the end of season nationals. Veteran Filipino coach Federico Pangan “Eric” Samson took up the Head Coaching job midway through the 2018 season.
While the 13th National Basketball League began true to form with comfortable wins for Kings BC, including an opener against arch rivals T-Rex BC, the road to a repeat league title was disrupted after an unexpected loss to Stingers BC in a scrappy and ill-tempered encounter that saw two Kings BC ejections and disciplinary action against two more players. A depleted team lost the league decider to T-Rex BC two nights later. Although both Zilaal and Mike Fey were selected among the tournaments Best 5 Players, the team was focused on winning a first national tournament trophy. Anfaal had also rejoined the team after making a full recovery from his PCL surgery.
With the squad back at full strength with the return of key players after serving suspensions, Kings BC recorded the first national tournament triumph by comprehensively beating T-Rex BC in the final of the 37th National Basketball Tournament. Both imports put on outstanding performances in the semi-finals and subsequent tournament MVP Mike Fey was at his dominant best in the final against T-Rex BC. The national crown marked a turning point in the brief history of the Club, with Kings BC going on to win every single competition held thereafter. The winning streak is currently in its third calendar year.
The joyous mood in the camp was somewhat dampened with the announcement that the Club’s iconic captain Zilaal would play his final season in 2019. Kings BC was determined to make Zila’s last dance a memorable one.
In 2018, Kings BC players Zilaal, Firash, Amzar, Aflah, Anfaal, Khuwailid and Rishfaan all kitted up for Maldives as well.
The main sponsor of Kings BC for 2018 was, once again, STO. Other sponsors “Submore”, “Manaam” and “Emboss” also featured on the uniforms. Since 2018, Kings BC has been affiliated with Espiritu-Manotoc Basketball Management of Philippines.
2019 Season
The 2019 Season began with three additions to the squad in Halaf Ali Hylum, Mohamed Shaffau Ibrahim and Ali Livaz. Scheduling difficulties meant that Ali Isham Mohamed[13] had to depute for Eric Samson as Head Coach for the 27th MBA Championship 2019. The tournament saw Kings BC comfortably beating every team in its path, including first-time finalists Raptors BC in a record-breaking finals margin of 42 points. In Zila’s swansong, the veteran leader also put on a show, rolling back the years. While Fira was chosen among the tournament’s Best 5 Players, the star of the show was undoubtedly MVP Amzar of Kings BC. With Man of the Match performances in five of the six matches featuring Kings BC, including the final. He ended the tournament with the staggering stat line of 20 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks a game.
A full schedule of national team commitments meant that the year-end tournaments were pushed back to 2020. Kings BC was once again well represented, with Zilaal at the helm of the national team for his final tours before hanging up his sneakers for good. Firash, Anfaal, Khuwailid, Amzar and Rishfaan all represented the country with pride. In the FIBA 3x3 Quest Finals held in Maldives, Kings BC guard Aflah represented the Maldives. However, his tournament was cut-short in the first game with a freak ankle injury, which would hamper him in the 2020 season as well.
The 2019 main sponsor of Kings BC was Submore, with “Submore Central” on the home uniform.
2020 Season
The 2020 season began with the bang, with the unprecedented scheduling of the national tournaments for February. 2018 MVP Mike Fey was joined by fellow American high-flyer Decorey Aaron Jones, to further strengthen the Kings BC roster in its bid to repeat the national championship. Former national player Ahmed Adhuham joined Kings BC for the 2020 Season.
Winning seven of eight games, Kings BC lifted the 14th National Basketball League 2020, Men’s Division 1 trophy. Both Decorey and Amzar were among the league’s Top 5 Players.
The following week, in the 38th National Basketball Tournament 2020, Men’s Division, Kings BC faced up against T-Rex BC in the semi-finals. After being down by 14 points, Kings BC rallied to complete an 86-77 victory to book a place in the final. After a cross semi-finals win against Stingers BC, T-Rex would also make it to the final. In a game that many claim to be one of the most exciting in recent memory, Kings BC once again from itself in a major hole by half time. T-Rex BC was leading 50-32. In a remarkable comeback that was even more spectacular than the semi-finals, Kings BC ended up winning the match 82-75 on the back of staunch defense led by Anfaal and an offensive masterclass by Decorey, Khuwailid, Firash and Rishfaan. Kings BC had won back-to-back national titles. Finals MVP was Decorey of Kings BC, who played the latter games of the tournament partially fit after taking a heavy knock in the first round of league games.
With the Covid-19 pandemic sweeping the world and forcing a lengthy lockdown in the Maldives, the rest of the season was cancelled.
The main sponsor of Kings BC in 2020 was Submore, with “Submore Crossroads” on the team’s home uniform chest.
2021 Season
Although the Maldives Basketball Association (MBA) announced a packed calendar of basketball for the 2021 Season, the continued spiking of Covid-19 cases since the beginning of the year meant that the first half of the season was effectively lost without any competitive play.
Kings BC embarked on a new venture by signing three rookies to the squad for the very first time. Three of the most promising talents in the country – Dhovemi Ibrahim Shafeeq (18), Mohamed Jidhaadh (16) and Mohamed Aik Neesham (18) became the first rookie contract holders of Kings BC.
In June, the Club went through a major restructuring, with former skipper Mohamed Zilaal taking up the post of Director of Basketball Operations and former Maldives sporting great Aishath Nazima assuming the responsibility of Director, Franchise Marketing and Public Relations. Both were inducted into the Club’s Executive Committee, while Zilaal also joined the coaching staff.
For the third year running, Submore is the Kings BC main sponsor. The team’s uniform advertises “Submore Hulhumale’”.
in 2021, Kings BC has included The Handy Agency of Australia as a player agency contact.
