Background and recording[edit]

"Shoes Off, Hands Wash" was written, produced, and mixed by Johnathan Heath. "Shoes Off, Hands Wash" was released on July 3, 2020 as the lead single from Johnathan Heath's debut studio album Relationships (TBA). Before its release, Johnathan posted a snippet of the song on his Instagram, hinting that that song was coming. "NEW SONG COMING OUT VERY SOON!!!!! Enjoy the teaser😆😝." He said in the caption. He official announced the song and cover art on July 2, 2020 saying, "#ShoesOffHandsWash OUT TOMORROW ON ALL PLATFORMS." The song itself is performed in the key of A Minor with a very upbeat tempo of 135 beats per minute. The length of the song is 2 minute and 11 seconds.

Composition[edit]

Throughout the song, Johnathan raps about how taking your shoes off before coming inside your house and washing your hands can help combat the virus. The song contains background vocals of Johnathan yelling the phrase "Rona!" which is short for Coronavirus. He also says other phrases like "germs" and "Coronavirus" all while repeating the chorus. "Shoes Off / Hands Wash / Shoes Off / Hands Wash / Shoes Off / Hands Wash / If you want this virus to get squashed". The song has the theme of how to protect yourself during the Coronavirus pandemic but also why Johnathan thinks you should stay safe. "Rona going everywhere / Need to take a shower it's in your hair / You might say I'm overprotective / I just say it's just effective". This line just proves that Johnathan isn't a fan of people who don't wash their hands and wear masks. The song has a "shiny synth" and a very Hip-Hop inspired beat created by Johnathan himself.

Music video[edit]

"We didn't even know that there was gonna even be a music video. My parents just really liked the song and told me that people need to hear it. So, I just go up one day and was like, let's do this." Johnathan stated. The music video for "Shoes Off, Hands Wash" was shot on June 6, 2020. It was shot throughout Johnathan's very own neighborhood. "Of course, we were quarantined because of the pandemic but we wanted it to be very simple. We weren't looking for anything big, we just wanted it to be straight to the point." Johnathan says as he discusses the video filming process. During the video, Johnathan dances around on his neighborhood's sidewalks and raps while sitting on top of a 2005 model of a Lincoln Town Car. In the video, Johnathan wears two different Adidas track suits throughout the video. He references the 90's rap group Run-D.M.C, as this was one of their main styles. "All I was missing was the matching bucket cap. But yes, I was very inspired by Easy D, Rev. Run, and Jam Master Jay of course. A heavy influence on me. Especially since my dad played them a lot." Johnathan says. The music video itself was praised for its "creativity" and it's ability "to get straight to the point." It's a "low-budget" music video according to Johnathan himself, "We didn't want too much, like I said before. But, I just wanted the video to be a fun way for people to stay safe during the pandemic." Johnathan says while explaining the origins of the music video.
