Background and composition[edit]

Lasting two minutes and forty-six seconds, "Nëse vdes" was composed and written by Mirud himself.[1][2] Mirud cited the song "Me tana" by Albanian singer Elvana Gjata as the inspiration behind "Nëse vdes" and that it draws elements from Albanian music.[2] "Nëse vdes" is a "catchy" and "fun" Albanian-language ethnic pop song possessing "a lot of flair" as described by music critics.[3][4]

"Nëse vdes" was independently released under exclusive license to Radio Televizioni Shqiptar (RTSH) on digital platforms and streaming services as a single on 23 November 2020.[5] Prior to release, the broadcaster officially premiered an audio video to YouTube on 16 November 2020.[6]

Critical reception[edit]

Upon the release, "Nëse vdes" was met with favorable acclaim from music critics. In a review for the Festivali i Këngës 59 line up conducted by numerous Aussievision members, the song's contemporary and traditional nature and lyrics, as well as Mirud's vocal delivery were praised.[7] An editor of Vocal.Media also praised the song's nature and elaborated, saying that the song could be a "good choice" for Albania as well as predicting a good result at the Eurovision Song Contest.[3] Doron Lahav of ESC Beat found the song to be "a little bit repetitive", but expressed praise towards the "effective" production and "rhythmic" verses.[4] He further wrote: "I could easily imagine the song representing Azerbaijan or Turkey".[4]

Festivali i Këngës[edit]

The Radio Televizioni Shqiptar (RTSH) will organise the 59th edition of Festivali i Këngës to determine Albania's participant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.[8] It will consist of two semi-finals and the final held between 17 December and 26 December 2020.[9] The broadcaster opened a submission period for artists and composers between August and October, while out of all received submissions, a jury panel internally selected 26 songs to participate in the competition's semi-finals.[10][11] On 28 October 2020, it announced Mirud as one of the contestants selected to compete in the contest with the song "Nëse vdes".[12]
