Social Discovery Group (SDGroup) is an international Internet holding. The company's offices are located in New York (United States), Hong Kong (China), Riga (Latvia) and Sliema (Malta).[1][2] The headquarters is in Malta. The company’s current goal is investment and development of Internet projects and technologies that help connect people with common interests:[3] for joint travel, language learning, dating, games and leisure. The company's interests also include supporting scientific and humanitarian projects. Corporate values are based on innovative technologies and modern art: for joint travel, language learning, dating, games and leisure.[4]

The company was founded in 1998 as a developer of technological platforms for online social communication.

In 2003, it founded the company Digital Chocolate, a developer of computer and mobile games.[5]

In 2006, the company founded UsabilityLab, the largest usability company in Eastern Europe.

In 2008, it founded an Internet-based payment system Payonline.[6] In 2012, UsabilityLab and Payonline were winners of the Runet Prize competition in the Innovation and Technology, and Economy, Business and Investments categories.[7] In March 2013, the TripTogether project was launched, helping travelers all over the world to communicate with each other.[8]

In 2013, Social Discovery Group founded the Real Estate Discovery Ventures Fund (REDV).[9]

In 2015, Payonline was sold for more than $8 million to the US public corporation Net Element.[10] That same spring, the company invested $500,000 in the development of LinguaLeo[11] and acquired the Dating.com website.

In 2016 it invested in the manufacturer of drone AirDog.[12]

In 2017, the Internet holding SDGroup became one of the investors in the Harbour Space Private technology and design University, which introduces new approaches to higher education for the most gifted and motivated students from around the world.[13][14]

In 2017, it became known the holding has been supporting the Gagarin Capital venture fund since its foundation, invested about $1 million in the fund.[15]

In spring 2017, SDGroup with Gagarin Capital, eBay, Facebook, GVA Capital and other companies conducted the SPACEHACK MOSCOW hackathon.[16]

In 2017, SDGroup with P2P cryptocurrency exchange Hodl Hodl and the co-working OraculeTang Space, organized the Baltic Honeybadger 2017 – the largest bitcoin conference in the Baltic States and Northern Europe.[17]

In 2018, Social Discovery Group and Hurski Limited joined in with the Gagarin Capital asset management company as General Partners. Amount of liabilities of the new partners equaled to $6 mln within the total dedicated volume of the fund which amounts to $55 mln.[18][19][20]

In December 2018, the venture fund Social Discovery Group, the Gagarin Capital fund, where SDGroup is the general partner, the Target Global, where SDGroup is the limited partner, entered the TOP-10 leaders of the most active venture funds of 2018 according to the RVC rating.[21]

For 2019, the amount of the Real Estate Discovery Ventures fund, founded by SDGroup, is $198 million. Currently the fund focuses on shopping centers in the USA.[22][23]

Projects[edit]

In spring 2015, SDGroup invested $500,000 in the development of LinguaLeo and acquired the Dating.com website.

In 2016 SDGroup invested in the manufacturer of drone AirDog.

In 2017, SDGroup invested 3 million dollars in Mangrove V foundation established by Mangrove Capital Partners venture company, implementing its strategy of early investing in high-tech start-ups from Europe and Israel.

In February 2017, SDGroup pulled out of the Streetlife project by selling its share to Nextdoor. SDGroup was a pioneer investor in the project. The return of the deal has not been disclosed.

In April 2018, SDGroup and Hurski Limited became general partners of the Gagarin Capital venture foundation. Investment liabilities of the new partners companies equalled 6 million dollars in a joint 55 million dollars trust fund.[18][19][20]

In December 2018, SDGroup Internet holding invested 900,000 dollars in Flo based artificial intelligence health app.[24][25]

In June, 2019, the SDGroup foundations increased up 1,2 mln dollars its investment share in Flo Health.[26]

In June 2019, SDGroup invested $1 million in Grabr, delivering goods service.[27]

Supporting science and art[edit]

In 2015, with Social Discovery Group and Dmitry Volkov’s support, there was established SDV Arts & Science Foundation. The foundation primarily focuses on support of contemporary art and analytic philosophy. SDV Arts & Science Foundation implements its own projects, supports initiatives by people of art, scientists as well as leading culture and scientific institutions.

Science[edit]

The SDV Arts & Science Foundation together with the Moscow State University founded the Moscow Center for Consciousness Studies (MCCS) at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University and currently supports it. MCCS is a scientific and research division primarily focusing on the mind-body problem, freedom of will and moral responsibility, artificial intellect and identity equivalence. The MCCS holds public lectures with the participation of the most outstanding experts on these issues from all over the world,[28][29][30] facilitates and supports studies of consciousness and analytic philosophy in Russia.

The MCCS has set up the international Summer Philosophy School.[31][32] The School represents a format of intensive lectures and seminars with the participation of the most outstanding world experts providing researches of consciousness problem, freedom of will and moral responsibility. Since 2014, the Summer Philosophy School has been taking place every two year. Such philosophers as John Fisher, Derk Perebum and Richard Swinburn participated in the work of School as invited lecturers.

In 2014, upon Dmitry Volkov“s initiative a philosophy expedition dedicated to the “problems of consciousness and free will in analytic philosophy” was organized. The expedition took place on board of a yacht heading to the shores of Greenland. Such outstanding philosophers as Daniel Dennett, David Chalmers, Paul and Patricia Churchland were invited to the board.[33]

Art[edit]

The SDV Arts & Science Foundation activity is based on the principle of active cooperation with artists. It mostly explains the nature of projects implemented by the Foundation since 2015.

On January 12, 2015, with the SDV Arts & Science Foundation support the Saatchi Gallery in London hosted Aidan Salakhova’s exhibition called “Revelations”.[34]

In Spring 2015, the SDV Arts & Science Foundation supported the album of «Contemporary Art» series release devoted to art of Russian contemporary artists and their role in the development of the Russian and world culture.[35]

In Spring 2015 within the album series presentation the Foundation founder Dmitry Volkov together with performance artist and painter Oleg Kulik made the performance called «Strict Proof of the External World Existence».[36][37]

In Summer 2015, Dmitry Volkov and Oleg Kulik created the OraculeTang - an art object for theart camp at the Burning Man Festival.

In Autumn 2015, the Foundation and Igor Butman’s producer center set up the first Street Piano Festival in Moscow.[38] Also this year the pop-up exhibition of contemporary art «Superconduction: challenge of art&technology» were held by the Foundation in Riga.

In 2016, the Foundation founder Dmitry Volkov joined the Board of Trustees of the Foundation of the Tretyakov Gallery. In April 2016, with the support of the SDV Arts & Science Foundation the Tretyakov State Gallery hosted the «Modern Art 1960-2000. Restart» exhibition.

In 2016, the Foundation became the official partner of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art grant programme and established a special «Art and Technologies» scholarship for young Russian artists. Dmitry Volkov is currently the patron of the Garage Museum.[39]

In 2016, the SDV Arts & Science Foundation acted as the official partner of the «Art» zone at the Geek Picnic 2016.[40][41]

On September 14, 2016, thanks to Russian artists and collectors (as well as Dmitry Volkov and the SDV Art & Science Foundation) the Pompidou Center in Paris hosted the exhibition called «Collection! Modern art in the USSR and Russia, 1950-2000» which became an unprecedented event of uniting various Russian artist trends and lots of certain collectors and artists. Dmitry Volkov’s gift to the Center was a Soviet Flag «brought up to date» by Sergey Bugaev-Africa.

From September 16 to 18, 2016, the Foundation together with Igor Butman’s producer center set up the «Transcendental Pianos Festival» in the Muzeon Park of Arts, where art, music and technologies united.[42]

From October 14, 2016, to January 29, 2017, the State Tretyakov Gallery with the support of the SDV Arts & Science Foundation hosted the exhibition «Unforgettable Meetings» by Leonid Sokov.[43] In October 2018, SDV Arts & Science Foundation supported the release of the album of Leonid Sokov’s works.

In 2017, Dmitry Volkov became the Board of Trustees head of the "Culture capital of the Volga Region" foundation.[44] From July 15 to December 10, 2017, the «Arsenal» Museum with the support of this foundation hosted the «Simple feelings» exhibition.[45]

In 2017, the SDV Arts & Science Foundation together with Andrey Bartenev created the «Aliens? Yes!» art camp at the Burning Man.[46]

On November 4, 2018, during the "Night of Arts" at the State Gallery on Solyanka Dmitry Volkov took part in the «Dmitry Volkov and Artists» performance. The performance represented a continuous five-hours long dialogue between Dmitry Volkov and Russian contemporary artists whose pieces of work gathered in the SDV Arts & Science Foundation collection.

In 2018, the SDV Arts & Science Foundation became a partner of the MMOMA Education Center. On November 22, 2018, a roundtable on «Open access to scientific information in Russia» took place within the cooperation.[47]

On May 8, 2019, Dmitry Volkov together with Russian media artists Natalia Altufova and Yaroslav Kravtsov presented multimedia pop up project FACED2FACED in frames of special program of the 58th Venice Biennale.[48][49]
