Background
According to the Global Nutrition Report in India, 38% of under-five children are affected by stunting and malnutrition, 21% of children are underweight for their height, and 51% of adult women are suffering from anemia.[6] In Odisha, as per 2011 census, the population of children is 50.35 lakhs and at least 8.39 lakhs i.e. 22.17% of children are malnourished[7]. Almost 35% of the total under-five child population is underweight in the state. 45% (0-5 yrs) of children are suffering from anemia.[8]. There has been a reduction in the percentage of stunting among children under five from 45% in 2005-2006 to 38% in 2013-2014 due to several initiatives based on health, sanitation, nutrition and food security, and increased use of ICDS and health services by people.[9]. Poverty, illiteracy and backwardness are primary reasons[10]. Anemia is another concern; at least 67% and 62% of female babies and women are affected by anemia in the state respectively. The percentage of infant mortality is higher in Odisha; 51 babies died against 1000 births. The mortality rate is high in Odisha due to anemia and malnutrition.[10]
