The Centre for Ageing Better (also referred to as Ageing Better) is a registered charity. The organisation’s stated aim is to “make ageing better a reality for everyone”. It was founded in 2014 and is a registered charity in England and Wales[1], funded by The National Lottery Community Fund[2], and part of the government’s What Works Network.[3][4]

History and Structure[edit]

In 2012, Lord Filkin chaired the House of Lords Select Committee on Public Service and Demographic Change, which delivered the 2013 report Ready for Ageing?.[5] The report highlighted the gap between the “reality and the response” – and how government and our society are “woefully underprepared” for a future with far greater numbers of older people.[6]

The government response to Ready for Ageing? in July 2014 supported the creation of a What Works Centre for Ageing.[7] In 2014, The National Lottery Community Fund announced funding for Fulfilling Lives: Ageing Better, a commitment to invest in programmes that improve the lives of older people. Alongside this programme it also supported the development of a Centre for Ageing Better.

By 2014 the first Trustees were appointed with Lord Filkin as chair, and a £50 million endowment from The National Lottery Community Fund was awarded in January 2015.[8][9] Ageing Better has also been supported by further development funding from the Department of Health and from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Lord Filkin served as chair until he stepped down in 2018, after which the Centre appointed Professor Dame Carol Black as its new chair in 2019.[10]

The current board of trustees for the Centre for Ageing Better is as follows:[11]

  • Dame Carol Black (Chair)
  • Nuzhat Ali
  • Margaret Dangoor
  • Liz Ericson
  • Dr Cathy Garner
  • Dame Lin Homer
  • Dawid Konotey-Ahulu
  • Professor Nicholas Mays
  • Daniel Oppenheimer
  • Ben Page

Charitable work[edit]

Ageing Better’s work includes:

  • Building an age-friendly movement through their work to challenge ageism[12], managing the UK Network of Age-friendly Communities[13][14] and the organisation's age-positive image library, which was shortlisted for the 2022 Charity Awards.[15][16]
  • Age-friendly homes, where areas of work cover The Good Home Inquiry[17], homes for all ages[18][19] and home improvement.[20]
  • Age-friendly employment, where areas of work cover back-to-work support[21] and employer guidance.[22]

It has previously engaged in work around health, communities and volunteering, and digital inclusion.[23]
