Oluwatobi Oyinlola (born 1992 in Ibadan) is a Nigerian-born inventor and entrepreneur. He is a researcher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),[1][2] where he is working on the city scanner project, a device that captures spatiotemporal variations in environmental indicators in urban areas, such as air quality or the thermal flux of the built environment.[3][4][5] He played a crucial role in facilitating the open-sourcing of the city scanner device known as Flatburn[6][7], allowing anyone to construct it by following the provided guide.[8] He is best known for his work with rLoop incorporated - a company supporting development of the transportation system Hyperloop, initiated by Elon Musk.[9][10]
Oyinlola began his secondary education at Bishop Phillips Academy, Monatan, Ibadan. In 2009, he gained admission to the Tai Solarin University of Education where he earned his bachelor's degree in Telecommunication.[11] In 2018, he became a World Bank scholar as a research student in Internet of things (IoT) at University of Rwanda.[12]
In 2019, he was selected by the Government of France as an exceptionally talented technical expert to develop smart city solutions.[13][14]
Oyinlola is pioneering a smart meter that would allow 'pay-as-you-go' cooking. This will enable customers to bypass the upfront cost of connecting to a gas utility and pay only for what is used.[15][16]
He developed SolarPocha, the world’s first solar-powered workstation equipped with IoT technology. The project has been shortlisted for UK Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation.[17][18][19][20] In 2018, he was named as one of the Most Influential Young Nigerians alongside Davido.[21]
