Tony Okpanachi is a Nigerian based banker, he is is the Managing Director/CEO of the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN), a bank based that is based on rendering loans to Financial Institutions like Access Bank plc, Diamond Bank, GTBank, and top Financial Banks, he is popularly known for his for his contribution to Development Bank of Nigeria. Prior to his appointment at DBN, Tony was the Deputy Managing Director at Ecobank.[1][2][3] [4]

Education[edit]

Tony Okpanachi was born in Lagos, Nigeria on the 15th of March 1966. He attended Ochaja Secondary School, Ochaja in Kogi State from 1976 to 1981 and proceeded to the Federal School of Arts and Science in Ondo for his A’ Levels from 1981 to 1983. He graduated with a Second Class Upper division and won the Abubakar Usman Memorial Prize for the Best Graduating Student of Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1987. He also possesses Masters degrees in Economics with Distinction from the University of Lagos (1989) and an MBA from the Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, UK (2010). He is fluent in English, Igala (his mother tongue), Yoruba and Hausa languages. He also has a working knowledge of French and Swahili languages. [5][6]

Career[edit]

Tony started his career working for the All States Trust Bank and the Intercontinental Bank Plc in 1990, then left to join Ecobank Plc in 2006 as the Division Head. He rose through the ranks to become the Managing Director, and CEO in several African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan between 2013 and 2016.
During his tenure as the CEO of Ecobank Malawi in 2009, Okpanachi led the acquisition of Loita Investment Bank, which he helped transform into a full-fledged commercial bank with 4 branches. Similarly, in East Africa, he commenced greenfield operations for Ecobank in Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Ethiopia in addition to acquired assets in Burundi, Rwanda, and Kenya.

Since his appointment as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) since May 2017,by President Muhammadu Buhari Tony has set up structures and policies necessary for building a winning team, ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, handling franchise-related issues, forging positive working relationships with local regulators, other stakeholders, and Development Partners to deliver business and developmental objectives of the institution.

Philosophy and Views[edit]

Tony believes in striving for global best practice in all its ramifications. He is convinced that the Wholesale lending model through financial intermediaries offers a more suitable path to MSME financing as they have established channels and provide competitive pricing for loan products. He strongly believes that the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN), as a wholesale development finance institution is positioned to meet its three specific mandate, which is to:

  • Increase access to finance for MSME by lending to participating financial institutions;
  • Provide partial credit guarantees for participating financial institution to encourage them to track the risk of lending to MSMEs[16]
